Title: Replacement Carb
Post by Onepumpchump on 10/08/18 at 07:06:02

Hello my brothas. Recently I have purchased a 1987 LS650 from its second owner. Bike has 5,000 miles on it, no previous wrecks, garage kept, in great shape. Previous owner re-jetted the carb so it would run rich, but it floods easily now, causing me problems on distance rides and occasionally when i ride to work. I'd like to throw on a brand new carb matching stock as close as possible, or replace with one that y'all suggest to improve function. Any suggestions for a newbie?

Thanks!

Best buy is fix your carb.
Throwing a new carb on is way too much money.
Garage kept doesn't mean the carb isn't needing attention.

Miles, and any modifications, any other details are helpful.

Are you sure it's flooding?  Do you see fuel running from the overflow?  Are you sure it's not fuel starvation?

Suggestions:

#1  Make sure you have a genuine Yamaha Raptor petcock. the stock petcock sucks and causes all kinds of problems.  Some related to flooding and some related to starvation.
#2  Change your oil and make sure it's not contaminated with gas because of #1.
#3  Clean the carb and fuel tank.  If the problem is intermittent, It's probably rust or debris getting lodged in the float needle.
#4  Replace the float needle/seat and adjust the float level if needed.
#5  Clean or replace the diaphragm/slide assembly.  The coating on it wears over time causing it to stick.  This would cause intermittent fuel starvation and it happened to me.
