Title: Barber's Vintage Festival Next Weekend
Post by stewmills on 09/27/18 at 07:02:58

This is in Leeds (Birmingham) Alabama about 90 minutes from my house.  It is an outstanding event if you have never been before.

Anyone going on Saturday 6 October?  I'll probably be there for the day.

MM, I'm going to look-it-all up and probably drool on a few things too!

Work and life have been super busy here, but hopefully we can get in a Fall ride sometime before it gets too chilly. I assume you didn't have to get that bum leg chopped off and trade the Guzzi for a sissy trike?

Don't laugh too hard at this, but:  Pot legalization in Canada starts Oct.17. You may have heard that the stock market in Canada has gone bonkers for pot stocks. Gains of 1000% have been common.
I have never used pot, or seen it in person, but I am an investor in pot stocks!!
As an investor, the US Border Patrol views people like me as profiteers in a criminal enterprise, and I risk banishment from your country for life. Consequently, I had to cancel my visit to Barber, I've done 4 previously and met some of you.
Until the situation changes, I'm stuck.
Have a great time, wish I was there!!! 8-)

Even executives of greenhouse suppliers have been banned already:

I'm not prepared to be the first investor banned!
ps: Stew:  those 'tank liners' really stink! 8-)

Na. , Stew

No relaps or nothing .

Fact is , I even bought a 2007 GS500 with 16,500 ish miles.    Original plan was to sell it in the spring ...  :-/ ...  if I keep it I'll have to put tires on it.   It lacks a little more fixing right now .    ::)

OK....back to the topic at hand.

I am a definite probably.

If the weather allows, I will leave on Thursday afternoon/evening and get most of the way.  The next morning I will finish the ride and get to Stew's in the early afternoon.

Then do Barber's on Saturday.....then head home on Sunday.

Weather may alter the schedule as necessary.

Woo Hoo....I have been wanting to go to Barber's Festival for years - but work has always gotten in the way!

The Museum will soak up a day! You'll need at least 2 days for everything. 2 hours to walk through the racing pits, 2 hours for the swap meet, 1/2 hour at Wall of Death, 1 hour at Ace Cafe Corner etc, etc, etc. Motorcycle Classics magazine will have a booth near Triumph tent.Charge up your camera! cheers! 8-)

MM - That offer is great, it resolves where to stay and how to break up the long interstate ride.  The trip to Stews is just short of 10 hours (537 miles) according to Mapquest - stopping by your house only adds 1.5 hours and 70 miles of travel time - plus I get to stop and visit with you and Marcia!

Tentatively I will plan on leaving on Thursday.....what time is "Check In" at the "MMRanch Manor"?

Title: Re: Barber's Vintage Festival Next Weekend
Post by Dave on 10/03/18 at 18:51:07

OK....Thursday night and I am all packed and ready to go.

I plan on leaving around 6AM on Thursday.....I anticipate arriving at MM's house around 2 PM.

If I can get away from MM's before 8 AM.....I should be at Stew's house around 2 PM on Friday.

Our plan is to leave Stew's by 6 AM to be at Barber's when they start handing out the tickets at 7:30 AM.

Then after Barbers closes on Saturday I will head up north to a hotel in Lewiburg, TN.

On Sunday I will complete my ride home.

I have ridden 300 miles on the Ninja in a single day when it was a normal sport bike - the most I have ridden it since the Cafe' conversion is 160 miles in one afternoon.  This may be a "bun buster"! :o

The GS is rideable but not tags and insurance yet.

We're all set down this way. My little brother will be riding the S40 and I will be riding the Ninja, this way we all get to take the quicker bike lanes into the event and get free on-site parking.  We made a couple of preparatory rides this week and he's got a good handle on the bike. He'll sleep over Friday night so we can all be ready to head out early Saturday morning.

Based on my last visit to Barber's, I am willing to bet that Dave and I will have the only two Ninja 250s at the event and the only S40. Seems people must be too embarrassed to show up on these little bikes, but not me  8-)

Can't say how bummed I am! Would have been 5th visit. Still haven't seen museum expansion!  Border Control issue is really hampering my travel plans, the One Show in Portland in February is next target. Hope it gets resolved soon.
Hey Stew, give us a rundown on museum expansion exhibits?????? Cheers! 8-)
ps:  if I could buy any bike, it would be a Wall of Death Indian Scout !

Zip,
We didn’t do the museum. We walked in the lobby to cool off and to let Dave see the enormity of it, but no time for a tour with only one day. They say there are a put 1600 bikes now IIRC.

I am on my way home, I am just a bit north of  Nashville at “Sad Sam’s” getting a snack and resting my bottom. So far the little Ninja has brought me 1,150 miles!  I still have about 4 hours of seat time to endure before I am home.

Post by Dave on 10/07/18 at 17:43:37

OK....I am home!  I arrived around 6PM.....the entire trip was "rain free"!

And, the definition of endure is pretty accurate - the little Ninja Cafe' seat from Blue Collar Bobbers was probably never meant for long distance riding.  I supplemented the padding with a 1" thick piece of foam that is sold for you to kneel-on when you are gardening - it helped but still was not enough.  I will build a new seat before I take this bike on any more extended trips.  I am well satisfied with the way the bike ran, the only thing that failed was the right front filament in the running light - it burned out around 9 PM last night (the turn signal portion still works) - a $2.00 bulb and that will be fixed.

I am not a fan of interstate highway riding - but this trip would not have been possible if I didn't take the fastest roads.  For those who like statistics - I rode a total of 1,329 miles, there was 25 hours, 15 minutes and 46 seconds of running time - which averages out to 52.63 mph.  The trip between Lynchburg, TN and Auburn, Alabama was not on the interstate - the first 100 miles was a 2-4 lane road that was nearly constant intersections and traffic lights....it was very slow going.  The scenery was nice (especially the Tennessee River) - but the nearly constant STOP/GO become very tedious - it took nearly 6 hours to go 200 miles and it really screwed up the average mph on the trip.

I did not get 74 mpg - I screwed up on the first tanks and mistakenly divided the mileage by the fuel price......not the gallons (Oops).  When traveling 70 mph on a motorcycle (even a small one) I think it is impossible to get great mileage as a motorcycle and rider is not very aerodynamic.  I averaged 63.71 mpg - the 70 mph stuff got around 62 mpg, the last 125 miles was my local twisty country roads with 45-55 mph speeds and I got 69.44 mpg.

On the way down I did end up drafting behind semi trucks when I needed to.  There was a strong headwind, I don't have a windshield, and at times it felt like the wind was going to push my head off my shoulders!  I found that some trucks have horrible buffeting behind them - but some are pretty smooth and provide a nice draft and cancel the strong headwind.  Today I was behind a streamlined tour bus for a while, and it had a very nice draft behind it.  I "teamed up" with a semi around the Nashville area and he blocked the wind for me, and I blocked the traffic for him and flashed my headlight for him when he needed to change lanes - it worked well for both of us.

My Pirelli Speed Demons were new when I started the trip.  The 1,329 interstate miles did begin to make the rear tire have more wear down the center.....I will have to start leaning over in the local curves to get it looking round again.  The rear tire wore 22% and the front 16% of the tread above the wear bars.....if the future wear is similar I can expect 6,040 miles out of the rear tire and 8,306 miles from the front, which is consistent with the wear I got when I used these tires on my Savage Cafe.

Barber.......This was my first time there, and 1 day was not nearly long enough to see it all.  I believe I would need a minimum of 2 days to get around everything, and the museum may take most of a day all by itself.  Maybe we should explore the idea of camping there next year.....I suspect it will be a lot of fun - but not cheap!  I did not see any of the trials competition, the museum, and ran through the vintage and bike show pretty quickly (the sun was really hot in the field where the bikes were displayed).

My 4 day outing was great fun. Thanks MM and Stew for giving me a place to stay!  The riding and company was great fun - both MM and Stew rode around with me for an hour or two once I arrived in Lynchburg and Auburn.  Hopefully I can squeeze another ride or two in before winter arrives in KY.

On my visits from the leftcoast, it was always a 5 day trip.  Did you get a chance to walk through the road-race pits?  The coolest bikes were always there, both home-built and modern Manx/G50 replicas. Ingenuity to the max! 8-)
ps: 1300 miles on a 250 is pretty brave!
