Title: My long national nightmare is over
Post by TexasThumper on 09/22/18 at 11:20:05

I finally got rid of my Savage, the greatest automotive horror of my life. I ended up giving it away for about the cost of a dented gas tank (mine was perfect). Total cost of ownership of this bike: 90 CENTS PER MILE. And then it was unsellable. Even suzukisavage.com didn't get an offer of $2.00 for it, in two separate attempts, running ads for weeks.

This is for a bike that I pissed thousands of dollars into. Its poor quality made it destined for failure - twice. But I kept every light and mirror and switch and tire and body cherry, and even the Savage forum didn't produce a single offer. Not a penny. I even included TWO crankcases which are worth hundreds if someone wants to part it out, and worth hundreds for everything else. I wouldn't part it; I just wanted this P.O.S. Savage the hell out of my life. Now done!

I'm telling you, I will advise everyone everywhere to NEVER buy a Savage, or for that matter, a Suzuki. It breaks down, the forks leaked, drinks a quart every 150 miles - and the oil sight glass is almost impossible to read unless you lay your face on the pavement and shine a high intensity light at it, costs money + labor to fix the backfire, you cannot roll start the bike (I couldn't, guess you need to be over 200 pounds), and YOU CAN'T SELL THE BIKE. When one engine failed, I spent $700 plus a used engine cost to replace it ... and that lasted 1.1 tanks of gas. The last event I'll call just been bad luck on my part, but all of the other items are due to the poor quality of the Savage, or maybe of Suzuki in general. Everyone I talk to - every single one - tell me that Suzuki is the Yugo of Japanese bikes, compared to Honda, Yamaha and Kawasaki.

Thank God this garbage Suzuki Savage is finally gone. My long national nightmare is over.

Wow!Seems a lot of people get lots of enjoyment from these bikes. Do they have a few quirks that need to be addressed? Sure. But they are generally simple to fix if you follow the instructions some smart people have posted here. These are not difficult bikes to work on. Basic tools and an ability to read are all you really need for most things.

Not sure there really is any reason to discuss or debate this issue.....you bought a used 1995 bike and had bad luck with it.

It was not a marriage made in heaven - the bike needed work, and it evidently was beyond your ability to do diagnose or perform the work on your own.

Not all relationships have happy endings - but the bike can be reliable and last for a very long time.....provide it is in good shape when you buy it  and gets regular maintenance and care (same as Honda/Yamaha/Kawasaki).

I hope your next 2 wheel adventure is more satisfying for you. ;)

I've only had mine 3 years but it has never skipped a beat. Cranks up in two turns every time and runs like a charm. :)

I think coming here and listing your grievances are about as equal to a conservative going to Berkeley and expecting open and honest exchange....
OK, who am I fooling, your chances here are far greater  ;D

Yeah, folks come here because they mostly relate positively to where this bike fits into their life.
Ain't a perfect bike, nor a perfect girl  :o
You just gotta figger out where to invest your need.

Lumping all of Suzuki, into one box, based on your experience, is fool hardy, and I believe more of a testimony to what kind of person you might be.

Hope your next adventure provides you with some better results, but you might try and lose your bitterness, first....
Just a suggestion you understand, your mileage may vary.

bought 2, one standard, one hotrod! Light weight, loads of fun, minimal maintenance for the enlightened! 8-)

Someone has to get the dud, and the bitterness is understandable. Hopefully I will soon be posting a photo of my 66000 km, roughly 41000 mile dealer service check, the last one in the service booklet. In a week I will have had it eight years, so I'm only averaging about 5000 miles a year, down a lot from before retirement in 2012.

TexasThumper

I  got a feeling this ain't the only area of your life that SUCKS ?

I've got over 100,000 Savage miles behind me and LOVE this design !

I have had and got rid of two Harleys instead of giving up the Savage , because the Suzuki is the better bike.

……………………………………….

I hope your life turns away from that "Not So Blessed" area .

Have your fun, boys, but 90 CENTS PER MILE COST OF OWNERSHIP.
Sorry, but that's in the territory of worst piece of nuts on two wheels. EVER.

Maybe four wheels too. What is TCOO on a Lamborghini? Over 90 CENTS PER MILE?

And not a ONE of you titans offered $10 for it. You talk the talk...

I've owned two savages.
Twenty thousand miles on the first one
Sold because my health went down
A few years later, doing better, a friend hooks me up with an 02 ,
I've got over seven thousand on it, I replaced the muffler, put a Dave's Special front sprocket on it and the upper motor mount bolts needed tightening..
Nobody knows what really happened to you. But , with the exception of Cheap Newbie and you, most people have a reasonably decent experience with the bike and this forum.

Are you sure it was a Suzuki Savage and not a bsa?

I'm not doubting your experience with your bike, but yours is unique. Just because your bike was a POS, that doesn't make our ownership experience an equal to yours. I've owned 25 bikes over my many years of riding, my Savage appears to have exceptional reliability with a cost of ownership of...I don't know because I've yet to perform a repair since I finished my build 3 years ago. My bike came to my home as an unloved near-basket case from neglect. I'm a fairly good mechanic and don't allow my bikes/cars/tractor/airplane/weed eater/chainsaw fall into POS territory.

Good luck with your next ride.

I also have a 95 I've owned since new , except for the plug leak and tensioner extension at 19,000 miles ,I've never been inside the engine. presently a 35,000 miles with only standard repairs (oil ,tires etc.) Either you bought a bike that was  abused , or your repairs where not effective , and that's to bad, but you can't judge an a Company or a select model of motorcycle using the ownership of only one bike ,that's not fact ,it's just your opinion.

I was actually looking for two engines to rebuild and I saw the ad for these 95's literally a day after I got two engines ready to ship.

I have 3 of them, all 1995's and they do run like c rap but that's because I don't take care of them.

Texas Thumper, really sorry to hear about your bad experience with the bike. Mine is an 06 with just under 30K miles on it and I do not think I could find a cheaper fun bike to own and operate. I truly do wish you the best of luck with your next vehicle.
