Title: Handlebar vibration question.
Post by IslandRoad on 08/20/18 at 01:25:55

Hi all,

I have a question about handlebar weights.

The background is, at one point I switched to some Superbars. I loved the look, but the ride was a bit challenging. I then swapped to some Z Bars with a 6' rise. The ride improved - However I kinda miss the Superbars (I may be prepared to sacrifice some comfort for style.)

Now, one of the problems with the Superbars is they are cheap - not in terms of what I paid for them, but in terms of quality! They had a surprisingly thin wall thickness. They are 1" bars but I had to pad out my 1" bar end mirrors to get them to grab. Aaaaand ... they vibrated, on the highway, to the point where a one hour ride would turn the ends of my fingers white and numb. I assume this is due to the light weight of the bars.

I have heard that weights welded into the bars can reduce vibration (as a side note, the bar-end mirrors I was running had some pretty hefty 'ends' as it was).

The other bars I've tried have thicker walls and feel just fine.

So my questions are:

Is it true that weights in the bars can reduce vibration? and,
Is there some kind of theory about weight/placement that could guide me in modifying the bars?

Google is your friend, but the end weights work by adding mass. This again makes it more difficult for the handlebar to change direction. This again makes for lower frequency and greater amplitudes typically.

I've never tried it, or know personally anyone who has, but some fill the bars. I heard of using sand, lead shot, or silicone. No idea if it would work.
