Title: Savage cafe conversion, mag wheels and disc brakes
Post by Honda-redrider on 08/12/18 at 17:44:33

It’s been a while since I had a real update on the savage, four years I think. Life happened, new job, couple kids and the savage was pushed aside.  Well... I finally have a functioning swingarm, subframe, tank, front end, brakes mounted, wheels installed.... etc.  here is one picture but I plan to upload more once I take some.  Enjoy. 8-)

Tell me more about the swingarm. It doesn't appear to be much longer. Does it allow for a wider rim/tire?

Hello Redrider, the bike looks fine but to me the lathe is more interesting.  At first I thought is was a Southbend but after looking at the details of the carriage that are visible I'm guessing that it is an older Logan.  I see that you have a modern tool holder on it, is it tight enough to use carbide cutting tools or are you using HSS?

Thanks!  Eventually I’d like to build an occasional cafe as I come across savages and s40 motorcycles to sell.  Chassis will be the same but maybe alter the body work a bit and obviously change the color scheme.

Also the swing arm is the stock length but slightly wider to accommodate the wider rim.  I designed my welding fixture so that I can change the width and length of the swing arms.  Plus I’ve never been a fan of the oval tubing.

Thanks!  Maybe some day I’ll consider selling them and possibly offer aluminum and chromoly tubing to.

Thank you!  You were right about the lathe.  It is 1947 southbend heavy 10.  Works great and is rather accurate.  Good ol American Iron.  The tool post is a Chinese job, It’s like a phase ll but the name escapes me right now.  I’ve actually been really surprised with it.  Obviously not an aloris or Dorian but for 125 bucks shipped with 7 tool holder, well you just can’t beat it.  I mainly use HSS but I haven’t had any issue with carbide.
