Title: Drill the fuel cap?
Post by SavageMan99 on 08/09/18 at 18:33:53

I need to get into my tank. I don't plan on saving the cap, so can I drill out the cylinder?
I know I'm hammering the posts, but it's almost ready to run, and I'm starting otr trucking soon. I'd like to at least run it around the block.

Maybe take the tank to a locksmith? You wanna be careful drilling a cap. Don't want shavings in the tank.

drilling the cylinder aint easy.
all the plates get jammed in the slots and you end up trying to fish each one out.
it's much easier to pick it if you can take it to someone.

Yeah, try a locksmith. I have a real good one here I have used to rekey toolboxes I buy cheap because people lose the keys. I think they charged 25 for the service and whatever the key costs, etc. worst case they can’t and I would hope they wouldn’t charge if they fail.

Take a flat wire like what's in windshield wiper blades and bend the end about a 1/2" from the end.
Stick that in the top part of the keyway and torque the cylinder.
Next get a small paper clip and straighten it out, but leave the small loop alone.
Use that to stroke the pins several times to push them in a bit.
the torque on the cylinder will cause them to stick until they all line up and the cylinder will open.

I'd be suspicious of anybody who can pick a lock that easily. ;D

Good locks are hard poor/cheep locks are shockingly easy.
Don't ask!

On my XV 920 cafe racer project bike that I got with no keys I was able to stick a large screw driver into the gas tank lock and turn it which allowed me to open the cap.

The locks are just cheap pot metal and they usually arent hard to jimmy but of course it will ruin the cap. I just looked at my Savage's cap and it doesnt look any more robust than the Yamaha cap so before I drilled into it I'd try the screw driver (as long as you are replacing the cap anyway).

The advantage to 'picking' the lock, as apposed to forcing it, is that once off you can remove the tumblers. This allows you to use the cap again.

Why wreck it?
It would sell,
Or
Use it..

It's open! Raked the tumblers. Tumblers are toward the front, btw.

You can remove the guts, and it will still stay on. Iggy key will work if the key blank is right.
