Title: Prayers Needed for my Wife.
Post by Dave on 07/30/18 at 06:01:12

You may have noticed I have not been quite as active as normal.....I have been a bit distracted.

On July 14th my wife and I left for a vacation to Saba to go sight seeing and scuba diving.  We had been planning this trip for more than 10 years, and it started out really nice.  The island is near St. Martin, and it is a volcanic island that is about 5 square miles - there are no sandy beaches as the volcanic island has very steep shorelines, and the only flat area has bowling ball sized rocks.....it is a bit weird as the waves don't make the normal surf sounds - instead you hear the water moving rocks around and it sounds like somebody is banging coconut shells together.

The first day diving went like normal, we did two dives and my wife has been diving since the 70's and logged her 200th dive (I am at 126).  On the second day the first dive was to be around 80 feet, and most of the other divers went to the bottom of the reef - Deb and I stayed a bit above the others and our dive computers showed we had a maximum depth of 55 feet.  We were breathing Nitrox with 32% oxygen as it allows for safer dving, and we stayed less than an hour.  When the other divers were coming up they stopped at 15 feet to do their safety stop, and we stayed at 30 feet while they were above us doing their safety stop.  When they went to get on the boat we moved up to 15 feet and did our safety stop at 15 feet for 3 minutes.  Our dive computers showed we had very little Nitrogen as a result of our shallow dive, double safety stop and Nitrox - we were safe to surface.

As Deb got on the boat she complained of a back ache.  The Boat Captain and Dive Guide asked her questions and could not believe that the Bends were not likely, as our dive put us far below the maximum safe limits for Nitrogen loading.  Deb was not sure if she pulled a muscle, pinched a nerve, etc.  She did not do the second dive and she went to the local Dr. around noon and was examined - he also believed it was not a decompression/Nitrogen issue.  (Please don't turn this into an analysis of why this happened......she did everything by the book and is an experienced and careful diver.  Over 60 years old, female and other physical factors somehow resulted in a nitrogen bubble issue in her spine that just should not have happened).

By 6 PM that night Deb had a horrible time walking, and her legs had gone numb.  The Dr. came and examined her, and they called an ambulance and took her to the decompression chamber and put her in for a 6 hour session.  The next morning she was back in for another 5 hours, then 4 hours again in the afternoon.  The Dr. determined it was too much for the small local team to address - so Deb was taken by medical helicopter to St. Martin, then by Learjet to Miami.  She could not fly on a commercial flight as she had to be kept at an elevation less than 1,000 msl.....the Learjet was the only way to get that done.  (Luckily she had purchased the Divers Alert Network (DAN) dive insurance, and it pays up to $250,000 for evacuation expenses).

Deb has been in the Mercy Hospital in Miami since July 18, and she has been getting 1-2 decompression treatments every day.  She is slowly getting better, and we are hoping for a full recovery with little remaining symptoms.  They began to step up her therapy on Friday, and she is able to do some walking with a walker - yesterday they were able to get her to take some very slow steps without the walker.....they had to catch her a few times as she stumbled.  She also took a few steps on stairs.

I stayed with her in Miami for the first couple of days until my vacation time was over - there was not a lot of reason to stay as she was in the decompression chamber nearly the entire time I was there (except for the hours she was sleeping).  Her estimated release is going to be on August 8th - but we are not yet certain what that means.  She may be released on an outpatient basis and need to come back for therapy - she will have to get a local hotel to stay while the therapy continues.

Please pray for her full recovery.  She is in good spirits and determined to beat this......the Dr. said her positive attitude has allowed her to make good progress.

Thanks........Dave

PS:  We will be going back to the island once my wife has recovered enough for her to travel.  The folks on the island are very loving and took wonderful care of Deb - she wants to go back and show them they helped her to recover, and they don't need to worry about her anymore!  The nurses in the small hospital were truly doing their best to help her, and they were extremely loving and caring.  Saba is like a step back in time - the folks don't lock their doors, there is no theft or robberies....and folks genuinely care for each other!

I didn't even know something like that could happen. I knew about the bends, but, like you said, simply shouldn't have happened. I'm sorry for it, and wait for the news that she's all mended.

Wow Dave, words escape me.....

As I am on vacation now, surrounded by my kids/grandkids, up in the mountains of Oregon, your sharing makes the fragility of life seem so much real, and present.
I am thankful for your faith, and really appreciate that in your time of great need, you include us with opportunity to pray to our amazing God.

Whatever the outcome I pray for peace, and acceptance, of our God’s will, and with many blessings to you Dave, your wife, and all those who you would have never come into contact with, otherwise, that your faith is abosulte, in our loving God.

Bless you, Amen.

Wow Dave ,

That's got to be hard on both of ya !    So , ya both are going on my Prayer List .

You send  Deb a big hug and Get Well Quick  for me .

I had no idea diving could be so dangerous … but I sort of suspect being below the water in that "Other-World" is very much kin to twisting the throttle as ya come out of a long sweeping curve .   I think its great that ya'll are share things together that puts that big smile all over ya.

Sorry to read that story. Hopefully live will begin to get back to normal on the 8th. You can second guess this all day - two experienced divers took the usual and expected safety precautions and followed protocol, but still something went wrong. Sometimes crap just happens, look forward and not back.

Should we be praying Deb . :

1.   returns to normal ?
2.   gets an ear of corn ?
3.   gets well from the bends ?

Dave , maybe you should ask her for me ?

either way , I hope you keep holding up for the both of ya !   :)

Deb said that she likely has 2 more chamber treatments left - she is not exactly sure as the Dr. said the treatments will continue until the progress is not noticeable.  So far she has a bit more feeling in her legs after each treatment - they poke her with pointy sticks and touch tuning forks to her legs......or touch them with cold metal to see where she has feeling.  The treatments started out being as long as 6 hours....and sometimes 2 a day - now they are once a day and around 4 hours.

Her therapy is helping her to learn to walk again - she can walk slowly with a walker, they have been getting her to walk between railings with a helper on each side.....when she doesn't hold onto the railings she needs to be caught every now and then.  They also have her trying to balance on one leg....about 30 seconds is her limit.

She said she will be able to walk again - but initially it will be slow and cautious.  She may have some residual numbness in her legs and torso, and it may go away over time.  There is just no way to know at this point if she will recover fully.

Her tentative date for release is August 8th.  We know she can't fly on a commercial flight, the Dr. doesn't want us going over Jelico Mountain which is around 2,200' msl.  We also don't know how durable she will be for a trip back - it is 1,100 miles from Miami to our home....and the Mapquest says that is around 17 hours - but that doesn't account for the stops and inevitable traffic jams in the summer.  While a healthy person is durable enough to do the drive in 2 days - I believe we will have to take 4 or 5 days so that Deb is not pushed too hard.  It may be that she would be better off going to her sisters house in Sarasota for a few weeks of recovery before coming home - I could go down and stay with them for a bit.

The next week will reveal a lot more - it will be 2 weeks on Thursday since her treatment in Miami began - and there is nearly a week left before they are ready to let her go.

Thanks for your continued prayers and support.

Well dang Dave, you guys have a lot on your plate right now....
I have this stinking hunch your wife knows what’s best for her, and  her limitations.....
I suggest you listen and do, as she says.
I’m guessing she is not a quitter, nor likes pity heaped upon her.

Funny in a weird way, that you just never know what the next moment holds for you.
Last night we went to a observatory where we are on vacation.
Had all sorts of scopes to use, different targets, etc...
It was really awesome, Saturn and it’s rings, Jupiter and it’s stars, Mars, Vega, all in view.
Got back to our place after midnight.
Did some night photography....
In bed just prior to 2am.
Somewhere between here and there, I fell out of bed....
Never in my life, even in my stoopers, did I fall out of bed.
I landed hard, but not on my neck, etc...
Could have been a real bugger if I had broke something, etc...
Just a tad sore, and a good story, which gets laughs, but you never know, it could have easily got a OMG [ch128558]

Please keep us up to date, thank you, prayers still coming....

Deb is doing a bit better each day.  The hyperbaric chamber treatments ended on Saturday.  Deb is glad of that, as they were 4 - 6 hours long and tedious - she would breath oxygen for 20 minutes through a mask and then 5 minutes on air with the mask open.....repeat continually through the entire session.  Because of the oxygen rich atmosphere she could not take in any books....thankfully they had a TV screen and she could watch movies.  Now that the chamber treatments are over the catheter is removed and she is training her bladder to function again.

She began physical therapy a week ago, and she is walking again.  She can walk with a walker and pushes it in front of her - she really doesn't need it anymore for support as her left leg doesn't buckle anymore.  She has been walking a bit without the walker - they have a belt on her and can grab her if she loses balance.  They have her putting her feet up on styrofoam cups and then back on the floor - she only crushed 2 cups in 20 tries......so she is gaining control.

She will be getting out of the hospital on Wednesday, August 15th, which will make her stay in the hospital just 1 day short of 3 weeks.  She will be going to her sister's house in Sarasota - it is yet to be determined if she is going to stay there for any length of time to get stronger......or if I am going to drive down to pick her up and haul her back home.

Thanks for your continued prayers and support.

Dave

Road trip!

Lily the dog and I left on Wednesday at 5 PM to go and pick up Deb.  We drove to around  11 PM and stopped at a rest area and slept in the car until about 3:30AM when a rude cattle truck driver drove his semi into the car side of the rest area and woke me up.  We got back on the road and were able to get through Atlanta pretty easily at 6AM and although the traffic was heavy there were no delays.  With all the stops for fuel and rest stops and breaks for Lilyl to stretch her legs....we arrived in Sarasota at 2:30PM - the trip meter said we went 980 miles in 15 hours and 47 minutes.....an average of 62 miles and hour.  That average would have been higher if we had not had to sit in a 40 minute traffic stop around Chattanooga when they shut down the interstate - they were blasting rock and had blast and then clean the rock off the roadway before they could let us through.

Deb has been at her sister's house recuperating for a week - she got out of the hospital last Wednesday.  She is now walking without a walker or cane - her legs are a bit stiff and she walks pretty well...just a bit slow and carefully.  Her left leg is still a bit numb, and she has some numb/stiff areas around her knees and waste.  The majority of the stiffness will go away.  She got a bladder infection and the antibiotics didn't work, and it morphed into a Urinary Tract Infection.  The new round of antibiotics seems to be working and she should be able to make the trip back to Kentucky when we leave on Sunday.  We will not make the trip at the same accelerated rate that I drove, and we do have to drive around Jelico Mountain which is a bit longer route - I need to be home by Tuesday afternoon so I can go to a meeting Tuesday night.

So.....Deb is doing much better - and Lily got to go on her longest road trip ever and is enjoying chasing lizards in Florida!

Thank you all for your prayers and support!

Many years ago, in the middle east, we had a similar incident with one of the ladies in our dive club. We had been diving, about six of us, and this lady somehow got them bends. Luckily the USS Saratoga was in port, Beirut, Lebanon and they allowed her to use their decompression chamber which was very generous considering the responsibility involved. Anyway, it took few months but she made a full recovery thank God. Not one of the other divers had any problem including me. Strange stuff nitrogen!

Glad your wife is on the road to recovery Dave!

We made it home last night around dinner time.  The ride was pretty much uneventful - other than stopping at just about every rest stop along the way.  Deb is happy to be home and is ready to work on the rest of her rehab and healing.  She is walking pretty well - just a bit slow and carefully as her left leg is still lacking some feeling and is hard to keep under control.

I am maybe getting too old to accept the current conditions on the interstate highways without griping about it - especially I-75.  I drove 74mph in the slow lane and driving any slower would have made me uncomfortable  - that speed seemed to allow me to blend in with the majority of the traffic in the slow lane and yet keep the Police from paying any attention to me as I drove past them....when I went into the other lanes I got out of them as quickly as I could so I didn't get run over by the folks going 80 or 90mph.  I was also overwhelmed by the number of semi trucks on the roads......the parking spots in the rest areas and ramps jammed full with trucks taking their time off the road - and in the daytime the number of trucks seemed to be equal to the number of cars in some places.  I guess the good economy and Amazon/Ebay shopping has made the shipping of goods by truck explode.  This became a problem in some of the hilly areas where the slow trucks attempted to pass each other and block all the lanes - sometimes these rolling road blocks could last for several miles before a lane around them opened up.
