Title: Exhaust too hot???
Post by VancouverSavage on 07/25/18 at 20:06:43

Hey, might be a stupid question but the Savage is my first bike... My exhaust pipe gets so hot it melts the heel of my right boot while riding.... Don't really care about the boots but I have a gooey blob of rubber stuck to the nice chrome pipe now. Any suggestions? Also, the left side of the engine case did it once too on a particularly hot day in stop and go traffic.

Hi it's a 1989 model. No mods that I know of, and it's in BC.

Exhaust gases ARE hot.
It's Gonna melt rubber.
Don't touch stuff to it.

Stock, the bikes run pretty lean, and therefor pretty hot. I've seen them blue the head pipes back under the motor.
Rejetting a bit richer will help. This is a double wall exhaust pipe, so it has to get pretty bloody hot to blue the chrome  :- :-[

Car engines are covered by a hood,.. but believe me, they get hot too.
It's in the nature of exploding highly flammable fuels a thousand times a minute.
Nothing wrong there.
You need better sneakers... ;D

Yeah my pipe is a lovely blue/purple where the exhaust header exits the engine. It's odd that Suzuki put in heat shields in front and behind where the rider's foot would rest but not all the way along that area of pipe? Guess I'll try to stop hugging the bike and keep my feet further out on the pegs!

Believe it or not, the whole pipe has a heat shield.
Imagine what would happen if you touched the inner pipe.

My pipe was turning purple (stock jets) I changed it to a 150 and it went to golden.  And I got better gas mileage.

if you are at sea level,(vancouver) jets of 52.5/150 work well for me. Bike has lots of torque and puts a smile on my face. cheers  8-)
Sea to Sky highway is my ride of choice.

The bike runs at the middle of the rpm range (and a bit higher on the highway) ,doing the white spacer mod would help ,as this is where the motor is lean ,unless your running a very large pilot jet (55).
