Hey guys first time posting but long time lurker. I bought a 97 savage 5 years and the carb was off the bike as well as gas tank, exhaust and seat. The owner was adamant that it would run when put back together. I've put back everything and changed the oil, rebuilt carb, new gas, spark plugs, as well as updated the petcock to a raptor. I've capped the vacuum line and tried to start it up and nothing. It will start if I place gas directly into the engine and bypass the carb. I've looked at lots of pictures of the carbs most members have and I have noticed I have an extra nipple. Can anyone tell me what it is for and whether it is affecting me starting it.

Plug it.......that used to go to the Evaporative Canister on a California bound bike. It is not on bikes that did not go to/come from California.

Be sure you use a vented gas cap.

Vented gas cap as stated above is useful here as that is indeed a CA carb. I replaced mine eventually but prior to that I simply plugged it with a hose folded over and a clamp put on it.

Just be thankful that extra nipple is on your bike and not that girl you went home with last weekend.

Extra nipple on that girl may not be a bad thing as long as it comes with the full breast (as in Total Recall). ;D

Ok I have it plugged, but I can't find a vented gas cap other than buying an O.E.M for over $100.00. Is there a mod to make the old cap vented?

If you have a vented tank, just stick a small air filter on the line and route it somewhere that won't be an issue if it leaks... like where the other vent lines go.
