Title: Won't crank over....
Post by edison on 05/02/18 at 12:44:36

2012 S40, new battery, new gas, raptor petcock just installed but had been sitting for a little over a year previously.....any ideas?  Seems to want to start but just can't get there....

ETA: 1,300 miles

Did you plug the vacuum port after installing the Raptor?

Yes, I took the old hose and cut it to about 2 inches,, filled it with RTV half way and let it cure overnight, then put it back on the vacuum port (Used a drill bit to keep it from flowing out the empty side of the hose)

Fuel+ spark+ compression = run    1) turn the petcock to off, open the drain on the float bowl to see if you have gas, if not clean the carb. don't forget the filter that sets just above the float valve seat 2) Adding a bit of oil via sparkplug hole will help seal the rings and lube the cylinder wall ,building compression and protecting them from damage until the bike starts and you have oil pressure , a shot or two of starting fuel may also help. Is your sparkplug clean and working? New battery, make sure it's fully charged. If the bike doesn't start on the first few revolutions  it's not going to , wait in between tries 10-15 min. or the starter can overheat and be ruined, replacement cost is about $300. I hope you didn't install a inline fuel filter after the petcock .

Possibly gunked up jets in the carb.

Will check the carb and the spark plug tomorrow...I did check the petcock and fuel is flowing in the on and reserve positions...I'm betting gunked up carb!

PS - easiest way to clean the carb? Can I do it by just pulling the bowl and using carb cleaner?

I drained the bowl on a t-shirt....green / yellow tinge from the gas, so the jets are probably gummed up...

Yes, but you'll have to repeat it several times till it works.

Or you can do it once, and thoroughly with YamaDip

You say "won't crank over" is that true, wont even crank at all?

we know the petcock flows fuel but you should open the drain plug on the float bowl place a dish under it and open the petcock again to see if your actually getting good  flow to the carb bowl, if not the filter above the float valve seat  could be partly or fully  plugged .

I pulled the bowl - was not getting flow initially and did have green gas and debris in it.  Now when I move the floats, gas comes in...have not used carb cleaner yet but I am hoping that it will be enough when I do.

I wish you luck ,but if you still have problems it might be better to pull the carb and do a more intense cleaning.

Get ether,
Pop the seat off
Shoot a breath of ether into the air snorkel
Try that

"Won't crank over" is a statement that can be interpreted in several ways.

When I read or see that statement - I am never sure if the engine won't rotate when they push the starter button.....or doesn't start.

It is much easier understood if they say "Won't fire, won't light, won't catch, etc."  It is a saying the folks likely inherited from family and friends.

It is very clear if they say:  "The engine turns over but won't start".  And I believe that is what it going on with this engine.

The fuel in this area can go stale in just a few months, and it can either fail to run - or also gum up the jets.  The pilot jet has a very tiny hole and can clog up very easily.  No amount of soaking will likely cure the problem - and ultra sonic cleaner, carb dip....and sometimes poking a small wire through the jet become necessary.  Don't put the jet back in until you can see daylight through it.

"The engine turns over but won't start".  This is it....

A puff of ether and if it hits, you know it's a fuel problem.
If it doesn't
Plug might be wet/fouled,
No s p ark

But fuel is a good start

And they Will spin over
But no spark
Once the battery is not fully charged, because you've been trying to start it.
Check out the battery.

OK....it's running but a little rough.....I am going to change the oil as I have some concerns about gas in there.

I didn't run it long enough to get warm, so it would immediately die as soon as I pushed the choke in....possible carb problem still or just needs to warm up?
