Two quick questions.
1. Is regular motor oil acceptable or do I need something special?
2. Is poor idling a symptom of a faulty petcock and if it is should I replace the stock petcock (vac. operated) with the Raptor (gravity fed)?

1. no, we like rotella. you can find recommended oils in the tech section.
2. everything can be a sign of crappy petcock... yep even that.

Thanks, I just changed the oil on the bike I just bought. I just wanted to be sure. I’ll make the change next time.
I’ve also just purchased the Raptor petcock from a Yamaha dealer. I think there’s a petcock issue because when I checked and changed the air filter it look and smelled like gas was sitting in the bottom of the box.
After doing some research, it mentioned that this could be caused by a bad petcock.
For $30.00, I’ll replace It and see if there’s a difference.

If you used motor oil intended for automobiles I'd recommend that you not leave it in until the next oil change interval. The additives in oil intended for cars can cause clutch slipping in motorcycles. If the specs on the oil container don't include the designation JASO MA or JASO MB I'd change it as soon as I could.

Many here swear by Rotella T4 15W40.

I use Rotella T6 5W40 (synthetic). If you buy the T6, make sure the first API performance standard on the label is CK-4.

Hey, not sure how much reading you've done here on the forum but there's definitely some things to be aware of.
A couple important ones relative to your post:
Be sure to turn the Raptor petcock to the "off" position when the bike sits. If, by some chance your carb float sticks, you could dump gas into the engine which will mix with the oil.
When you change the oil, drain the puke tube hanging under the bike and be sure to put the cap back on.
None of the little quirks of this bike are a big deal and shouldn't make you nervous if you just take the right precautions.

Below is a reply that I've recently received. I was wondering if the 15W40 would be too heavy. I live in Willow Springs, Illinois. A suburb of Chicago.

The Rotella T4 15W40 will not be too heavy. I assume by that you meant too thick for winter use. The T6 5W40 synthetic will flow better when cold, but you are not going to ride that Savage in freezing weather, are you?

I plan on riding as long as possible. I think I'll use the T6 5W40 (synthetic).
