Title: For a greater cause..,,,,.
Post by raydawg on 03/04/18 at 21:09:35

As a society, I think it would help if we could surrender some of our “freedom”....... if it serves a greater cause overall.
I will list examples where this type of impinging has been employed.
Liquor and tobacco.
They have put constraints on its advertising.
Is this a good idea, or bad?
I believe the motivation was good, in hoping it might stem some of the effects of glamorizing the product.
Would you agree?
It’s not punitive, even tho it can very well
Lead to loss of revenue.

With this in mind, do you think we should use the same reasoning for food?
I know looking at a commercial can spark me into wanting to eat some chips and dip, or go grab a burger....
These foods can be killers as well.
The number one cause of death is diet related.
Our society presently is represented by over 60% of adults as being obese...
That cost ALL of us.

It’s not a cure, for sure, but if it works on stemming tobacco and alcoholism, should this be a possible option as well?

I believe Michele Obama was hoping to launch awareness to a higher level, but that is a pretty big lobby, and hungry crowd, to overcome.

Your thoughts?  :)

There's problem with your logic on this.  Chips, BBQ, McDonald's, etc.-  will not kill you over 50% of the time.  Tobacco does.  Smoking has zero benefit to the smoker.  However, you need food to sustain life.  So the logic of banning of tobacco ads is, in my opinion, justified.

Food and alcohol, that's a different story.

Michelle Obama was on the right track - it's about education.  But it has to go beyond the school, that education needs to start in the home.  Advertisers are going to do push what they can, when they can, as far as they legally can.  We as a society are going to follow that lead because, well, as a whole, we're idiots.

It's up to the parent first.  I see so many young parents asking their toddlers what they want.  Seriously?  A toddler has no clue what he/she wants.  As a parent - you tell them what they'll get.  There is no negotiation.  You instill in that child what is right and wrong, that's not society's responsibility.

Yes, there needs to be common sense restrictions on marketing to children - no ads for alcohol within eyeshot of a school, etc.  But it will always come back to a conscientious parent.
