Title: Rear tire
Post by hotrod on 02/26/18 at 17:45:19

The stock rear tire is 140/80/15. If I put on a 130/90/15, will I end up with the same circumference ?  Anyone using a 130/90  ?

Maybe you can get your answer in here.

The manufacturers can't be trusted to get it exact. Like shoes, same size, different brands, different fit.

140/90/15 is known to fit ,130/90/15 should be no problem.
these are avg. numbers more expensive tires may have slightly deeper tread.

The 130/90-15 is a great replacement size for the stock 140/80, and there are far more (and better) tire choices in that size.

The Kenda website has 'tire weights' plus all the other specs. The weights due to different sizes is eye-opening!

cheers! 8-)

That weight chart sure doesn't make me want to use a 120/90H18 tire!

I wonder how much hp would be required just to get that going? BTW, that's a rhetorical question.

It's a rotational question...

Can someone explain for sure to me this sizing meaning? I think I know, but  I wanted confirmation.

Let's use this size for example:  120/80-17

The 17 obviously refers to wheel diameter.

The 120 is the width of the tire in millimeters.

However, it's the 80 that I want to be clear in my mind.  I have heard that the 80 means percent of width.  In this case, it would refer to 80% of 120 which equals a 96mm height of the tire.  Is that what you all think is true?

or ...

Could the "80" simply mean that the tire height is 80mm (i.e. not percent, but actual mm dimension)?

Sidewall is 80% of the tread width...

Sorry I troubled all of you.  I went on a website that explained the sidewall height (tread to rim) which IS percent of tire width.

hp won't get the tire moving ,but torque will.

The ME880 150/80 is an excellent tyre for this bike and the circumference must be a little larger than stock as the speedo is almost exactly correct.

A 150/80 tire is std. on a 3.50" wide rim and can be fitted on rims up to 4" wide.....and is not recommended for anything less than 3.00" wide.  The Savage rim is only 2.75" wide.....so it is a bit narrower than it should be for that size tire.  A few folks who have tried them have had rubbing issues on the bolt heads under the fender.

@Dave,

Yeah, if you remember my original post on this I was mightily annoyed because I told the gf to make sure the tyre is a 140/80 and the shop put the 150/80 on anyway...

However after checking it out, namely that it did not come anywhere near the bolts nor did it come near the swing arm, I can confirm that this tyre handles superbly and feels very sure footed.

It appears to be larger than what is recommended so this ME880 150/80 might just be an exception, I would not recommend another branded 150/80. I did note though that the profile on this 150/80 when mounted is identical to the profile on my 130/70 mounted on my GS!
