Post by joelite44 on 02/09/18 at 09:52:34

Hello, is the SUMO gasket kit on ebay any good?

THanks!

Depend's whether you need them all. I'm sure the quality would be fine, I mean why wouldn't it be.

I bought a stator-side gasket on e-bay once... Nicely cut, but material was porous and too thick... even tightened to near double specified torque, it still wept oil.
I demanded refund and bought a factory Suzuki part.

I'll go aftermarket for a lot of parts, but not gaskets.
Too much work to do over.

You need to use gasket sealant around the entire perimeter of the side cover gaskets. Permatex #2 works fine. Or they leak. Head gaskets are good. Some O'Rings are missing that you will need if you pull the top end.

The factory doesn't use any sealant on the gaskets......and I don't use any type of sealant where the factory uses gaskets.  I only use sealant where the factory used sealant.....although I do put a little bit on the rubber plugs where the wires come out of the side cases.

I was referring to the cheap knock off gasket set. I had to put sealant around the perimeter or they seep oil.

Oh.......I haven't tried the cheap gaskets.  I just bite the bullet and buy the factory pieces, as I hope once the engine is together it won't come apart for a long while! ;)

I get factory gaskets also. But check out the first thread of this topic. That's where this saga started...  :-?

Yep.....I didn't vote as I didn't see an "I dunno" option. :-?

The description claims it has silicone sealer applied to the gaskets where required - I didn't see any visible evidence of the lines the stock gaskets have.

"The Gaskets comes with Silicone Line Coatings. Non Asbestos Armstrong. Special Chemical & Mixture have been treated to the Gasket materials in order to withstand high Pressure oil resistance."

Only Suzuki side cover gaskets for me. Less headache and no oil leaks. I use my Dremel with a stainless wire brush to clean and prep the surfaces first then wipe with 91% isopropyl alcohol. Works fine lasts a long time.  8-)

Bite the bullet and get OEM gaskets , pay more no leaks
2nd choice is Vesrah gasket with sealant where needed
Never heard of Sumo gaskets so idk !

Hello and thanks for your honest replies. I think its a smart choice to go with OEM gaskets.

My motorcycle is leaking oil into the combustion chamber and fouling my spark plug. It has done it several times and I really want to fix this issue.

I am mechanically inclined but no experience on motors at all. I want to do the work myself or have someone else do the work but I want to know what else my motorcycle need in order to run properly.

Its a 1997 and I'm aware some parts must be old. Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Not likely a gasket issue, most likely rings.

How many miles on it? Could be rings or valve stem seals.

I plan on doing a head rebuild and check the cam chain tensor as well.

Those are the fixes I have to do to my 22.000 miles bike.

Hello fellow sushi savages

First post here after taking the valve cover off

I found out none of the bolts holding the valve cover are original. Just long and short 5 mm Allen head bolts you can find at hardware stores. I have added some photos for your viewing pleasure.

Any comment is well accepted even critics. This is my first bike and first hand experience owning a big (er) motorcycle. :-?

The problem is oil is leaking into the cylinder and fouling my spark plugs and leaving me stranded everywhere. I know the problem might be valve seals or rings. I first hand thought it would be the oil plug problem but that seems to be solved since it looks like it was sealed with permatex.

No way it can be the plug cap. Under that is a head nut and it doesn't enter the combustion chamber. No way it can be anything up in that area except valve stem seals. You have to pull the engine out of the frame and then pull the head off (6 nuts total) and of course pull the cam. Once you pull the head off the problem should be apparent by visual. Take pictures as you progress deeper into it. You should have a shop manual for reference and get the valve timing correct.  I have both (New) head gaskets and 4 valve stem seals for sale if you need them. $35.00 plus shipping.
