Title: Lithium battery
Post by JLC on 01/27/18 at 15:22:18

The battery on my Sportster is not holding the charge.  I could buy an AGM (same brand as I have on the S40), but I am thinking of replacing the battery with a Lithium one. Any recommendations?

PS: I did read the posting "Do not buy Earthx batteries"!

They are very small and light, can be mounted upright or sideways or upside down...very handy.
I got one last year and had a problem with it, contacted the company that sold it, and after some questions etc. they did replace it.  It has been working ok since.
Dave got one a while back and has been using it for about 2-3 yrs maybe without an issue.
Lots of folks really like them.

DO NOT CHARGE THEM with a standard trickle charger regardless of what they may say.

I have a Battery Tender brand lithium battery and it has performed flawlessly. It can be charged on a regular charger, but as Lancer said it can not tolerate a trickle charge.

I bought my EarthX for my Cafe' bike in 2013...and it is still working fine.  I have never put it on any kind of a charger or tender.  It holds a charge just fine for the 5 winter months, and the bike starts right up in the spring.  My Cafe' bike doesn't have any clock or other gear that uses battery juice when the key is off.

While I am happy with the EarthX, I only spent the extra to get the Lithium for the small size and light weight - if I was replacing a battery in a stock bike.....I would likely just get a quality brand AGM battery.

The next battery that I buy for any stock bike will be this "motocross" brand....it is made the same place that Yuasa batteries are made - in the USA!

While I agree about standard battery tenders, Battery Tender makes a tender that is supposed to work with lithium batteries.

I have a Antigravity AG-801 on my bike.  Very small, very light and very strong.  Mine is a year old and it's been great so far.  I would probably opt for their OEM sized battery if you have stock bike.  Otherwise you'll need longer cables because it's so small.

I bought a Shorai for my Sportster 2 years ago and have had no issues with it. At that time the Shorai was among the best of the lithium batteries but it was also very $$$.$$ ! Good battery worth the money , so far.

I've had a Battery Tender Li-Iron BTL14A240C for 8 months now and it has been fine.
It cranks the bike fast and it is almost weightless. It is like a magic box.
I think all my future battery purchases will be of this type. The cost is a little more but to me it is worth it.

Since you're replacing the battery in a Sportster, unless your bike is not stock, and size and or weight are a consideration, I don't think I'd spend the extra money for a Lithium Battery.

I just replaced the battery in my 2004 XL883 with one of these:

It hasn't been in there long enough for me to comment on longevity yet though.

I heard about them here:

My Sportster is stock, and I am a fan of AGM batteries. I have them in five of my vehicles.

When I went to the store this morning, the lightness of the Lithium battery won me over, and this is what I bought.

By the way, I do have a AGM battery in my S40!

Yeah the lithium battery in my tracker is 1/3 the size of stock battery and weighs 1.8 lbs compared to over 11 lbs and more CCAs !

the only thing that makes me worry about lithium batteries is, you need a special charger for them right?   but your bike also charges your battery.....  how does the special lithium charger differ from the charging from your bike?

does it matter?  idk?

I'm surprised to see some concern with Microgravity batteries, I have one of their jumper battery things and it works awesomely for 2 years now.

No special charger required. If you have a low battery it’s fine to charge it on any old charger that puts out 14.2-14.8VDC. As mentioned, you can not use a standard trickle charger.

Using anything other than the recommended charger you will damage the battery!

I bought this lithium charger: BikeMaster Lithium-Ion Battery Charger/Maintainer

Price was $29.14 with free two day shipping (Amazon Prime).

Have Lithium batteries in all my bikes. And a bunch of customer bikes. A few things will kill them. Overcharging, letting them get completely flat, and using a charger with a 'desulphite' cycle, such as the one found on some Optimate chargers.
Had some long chats with the folks at Shorai and Battery Tender.
The early Shorais needed their charger, the later ones don't. In fact, if you have a Shorai that is almost flat, they told me to but it on a conventional charger first.
Shorai also said that the early Battery Tenders had too low a voltage level in the maintenance mode to keep their batteries charged. Later (last 10+ years) have a slightly higher maintenance voltage level and work well on Lithium batteries. The lithium batteries like a little higher charge level than is found in a lot of vintage bikes (Airhead BMWs use 13.8 volts, and come in at fairly high RPMs). I've used the batteries in old bikes that I upgraded the charging system on.
Early Suzukis (70's and early 80's) had a charge rate of 15.5 volts. That is what the factory called for. Never saw another brand of bike that did that. 15.5V is enough to blow up a lithium battery.
I usually go as big as possible when using a lithium, as they lose a lot of punch when it is stupid cold out. Turning the key to the 'Park' position for a minute and lighting up the tail light will put enough draw on the battery to warm it up internally and help the cold weather cranking.
And the usual stuff, upgrade the hight amperage wires. Check all the charging system connections.

Correct, and my Battery Tender battery says that I can use a standard charger. And I have.
