Title: Magneto Coil Question
Post by Savageman on 12/30/17 at 19:44:36

I acquired a used Mag coil. The lower coils are darker in color than uppers. It Ohms out at .9 ohms coil to coil. No phase is grounded.

I think the lower coils get darker because they always sit in the hot and cold oil when on the side stand. I've seen many other mag coils that look the same.

Question is has anyone else noticed that on a good mag coil that's used? My feeling is just because it looks like it got hot doesn't mean it isn't any good.

Opinions?
:-?

I think you are correct - especially if the previous owner didn't change his oil very often and ran around with really dirty oil.

There is however a belief that eventually the windings break down - so the newer the magneto the more life is likely left in it.  I would rather use a magneto winding from a 2016 than a 1986 model.....just sayin'.

I hear ya on that. Like most used parts it'll be a crap shoot. But a cheap one.

On the other hand if it was from a 86 and still working even with all of its historical abuse (Lack of maintenance) then these are pretty solid.

Well you checked it out with a meter so it should function ,even if it failed somewhere down the line it would have only cost you a side cover gasket.
