Title: Interchangeable
Post by TheSavageRookie on 12/18/17 at 13:54:14

Hey guys new owner of an 87 savage. Need a few things like a caliper to start and wanted to know if these parts are interchangeable throughout the years or if I'm limited to a few years

Thank you! Hope you don't mind but I have another question. Bikes been sitting for about 10 years. I've done the raptor petcock swap. Cleaned out the tank. Going to get the carb rebuilt, but I can't seem to get it out of neutral. Any ideas?

Running? put the kickstand up or the engine will die.
Off? roll it a bit, the transmission dogs need to be aligned.

Also, don't stomp on the shifter, roll it a bit with pressure on the shifter and it'll drop in.

I wouldn't try to spin the motor until I got oil in there. The rings are probably dry.

Currently not running no. Don't want to try running it without having the carb done. Thanks for the advice. Really glad to be part of the community

I have a caliper I can sell. Do you need the - mount? -bolts? - pads? - line? - master cylinder? - disc?
Where do you live?
Let me know and I will try to help you out.

Before you start mucking around with the carb, I would oil the cylinder, make sure you have a good battery and see what happens.  You might be surprised.  I always like to see how things go before I tear into anything.  Then I work through potential issues one step at a time.

For the neutral issue, roll the bike back and forth while working the lever.  This will get the gears to rotate a little and hopefully allow you to find neutral.    DO NOT mash on the shift lever.  All that will do is bend the shift linkage and it will eventually break.  It may already be bent and contributing to the problem. You might want to take a look at that too.   You don't want it to break while you're out on the road and have to ride home in first or second gear.  I found this out the hard way.

EDIT:  Just realized I missed Varsy's post about the neutral issue.  Do what we said.  ;)

I know I need the caliper. I might needs the bolts haven't checked the slide pins to see if they're ok. And most likely a disk.

Don't roll the bike backward to try shifting!bikes made before 1996 could be damaged! they don't have the new idler gear in the starter gear train so should not be moved in reverse. roll the bike forward only.

that only applies if they are rotating the engine, which gentle rocking won't do.
