Title: kickstand light coming on with start button
Post by seve321 on 11/26/17 at 11:52:13

I have a 86 savage and I just replaced the starter. Now I can't get it move. I hear 2 clicks and nothing moving at all. I've also notice when I have the kickstand light off it will come back on when I press the start button. could that be whats causing the starter to not move?

1st. why did you replace the starter?

2nd, I think you need to adjust the decomp solenoid or recharge your battery.  When you activate the starter, what's the voltage?

Possible, but more likely you have a short.

The first click is your decompression solenoid... the second may be your starter solenoid trying to close the circuit.

It is possible you have a bad kick stand switch, a short, or a failing starter or solenoid.

the '86 also has an issue of breaking starter teeth.
on shut down the engine can kick back against the starter either busting teeth or busting out the mounting for the starter.

a bad KS switch would result in the starter being inactive.
starter was just replaced, but is questionable.  But hopefully tested prior to installation.
Yes, relay could be bad, check the voltage at the starter.

I replaced the old starter because the internal magnets were all broken.I checked the new starter and it working like it should (even checked it with it installed on the bike). I've recently replaced the relay as well. It looks like there's no voltage going to the starter.

if you got 2 clicks, then both the decomp and the relay are going.
I would suspect the decomp adjustment, but check the power to the starter.

There seems to be no power going to the starter at all

relay, new or used?

relay was replaced a couple of months ago. Although I've been trying to start it up a lot because my carb was gunked up.

Starting it a lot is what killed your first starter  it overheated and is why the magnets released use the starter for a minute ,it then needs to rest(cool down) for ten or fifteen before using again .IF the bike doesn't start on the first few rpm, it wont start at all ,you need to look for the problem .

So its looking like the starter solenoid is bad. I jumped the two terminals on to solenoid with a flat head screwdriver and it turned over.

is it possible the control leads are hooked up backwards?

Its possible since I've changed it out before, but before my starter went out it was working fine. and I haven't messed with it since i put it in.

What's a kickstand light? I've never seen one. Is this on international bikes?

It's just the light on the speedometer that lets you know there kickstand is down. It's a red light and there's a natural light as well (green) right next to it. just indicator lights.

Early savages only.  I'm not sure what year it was discontinued.

I'm assuming that this is early models since mine is a 1986 which is the first year made.

Only the 86 had the KS light.
