Hairpin springs have been reported  to snap. I think coils look better.

Have also kicked around the idea if still using the rear shocks just to mount the seat directly to the frame like the original .

I ran my bike as a bobber a few years back, I think running the shocks is the best way to go from the stand point of handling and preserving your spine. If you go to better and taller shocks(I used Progressive's) you'd get a better ride and also decrease steering head angle which pays off in the curves , and hard mounting the seat would be fine.

Batman a question about the progressives what size did you get? Im lookin at the 10.5's and im hoping they are lower than the stock length is this true?

 Whats the estimated weight needed for the stock shocks to compress?

 I can tell a huge difference between using a springer and a stock seat.  With no springs it feels like I straight welded the rear tire on.

Ruckus, the stock shocks are 10.5", If you're determined to lower the height ,it may be possible to move /or make new brackets ,to move the bottom mounts back nearer or even over the axle. This has the advantage of still allowing full movement of the shock while lowering the height ,you'll need to watch out for fender/road clearance.

Eegore ,don't really know, guess you would have to use a spring compressor , but the travel is only about 2 "
