Title: Tachometer.
Post by norm92de on 11/21/17 at 09:08:11

I'm in line for a Christmas present.

I want a Tach. for my Zuki. Price is not an issue and I can fabricate any brackets etc. myself. It must be pretty and not look like a cheap piece of junk. Analogue is preferred.

What are the recommendations?

I got the mini tach from Ryca:

Works well on the S40, and by no means is it ugly.  I am sure there are "prettier" tachs for sale though.  :)

^ What he said!

I had one on my bike for a while. Might even install it again once I'm finished with the new handlebar setup.

If you get one of these, just let me know if you want the instructions for installation. It's simple! I have some photos and instructions I made when I installed it. Happy to share them  :)

I clicked that Ryca link. Now it's popping up on Facebook.

I got my tach a long time ago and it was free.  It's not shiny, but I think it works great and it's not distracting in any way.  Maybe not as good as it used to, but it still works well enough to know how hard I'm pushing the Savage.

;D ;D ;D That's what I use now! However, I've only been riding for a year, and my only previous experience was on 2T dirt bikes as a kid, and then a Ninga250 as my first bike. The Savage/S40 is a completely different beast, and it took me a while to get used to the low RPM and the torque. The feedback from the tach helped me heaps: that, and a bit of research on here about HP, redline, and torque. I get a lot more fun out of the bike and ride with a lot more confidence now. If I do install the tach again, it'll be mostly for aesthetic reasons  8-)

You guys are much more skilled than I am. Just by listening to the engine, I could not tell if the idling engine was at 900 rpm, 1000 rpm, or above, which is the main reason why I bought the tachometer. Right now I set the idle at 1200 rpm.

Another reason I fitted the tach is that I use it instead of the speedo to check my speed, as it is mounted on the handlebar and I don't have to look down to check.

JLC,
That is pretty much my thinking. :)

I'd just do a google search for motorcycle tachometer, twin cylinder ones will work as our ignition is wasted spark. There is also a thread somewhere in tech tips

I decided to go with RYCA. I think supporting them is probably a good idea since they seem to be helping the savage with their efforts.

Also, I like the look of what they are selling and it is priced as well as others that are selling a lookalike product. Most of the tachometers are 13000 rpm models whereas RYCA"S is 8000. I think the Poor little savage would blow its top at 8k let alone 13k ;D

Thanks for the replies.

If memory serves me right, the Savage will blow its top just before 7k  ;)

Is that a bitter and expensive memory? ;D

Hahaha ... no! it is the result of researching on this site while tuning my carb!! In fact, as far as I understand, the little Savage can't generate enough power to blow it's own top. However I wouldn't want to drop down a gear accidentally while testing top speed! .... I have missed a shift a couple of times though!  8-)

Note to norm92de:

I updated my post with the instructions and
pictures for installing the RYCA tachometer.
They are the ones that IslandRoad used for
his installation in the picture above.

Here's the link to my post:

Let IslandRoad or myself know if you have any questions.

Low compression(8.5:1) and valve float if you over rev , makes the chance of blowing the engine ,zero.(but I wouldn't make it a habit)

FWIW,
Wiring in to the horn is not necessary since the positive side of the ignition coil is as positive as it gets. The only problem is the number of wires involved. :)

Hi Norm, I commented in the other tach thread also. I'm really curious about your comment. Is there a simpler way to install? Would be good to know [ch128521]

Islandroad,
B+ is all over the bike. the two nearest are the horn, as you used, and the plus side of the ignition coil. I don't think it matters much which is used.

I have made a bracket but am going to try it a bit before I decide on the final location. Mine mounts on the handlebar clamps, either fore or aft of the bars. A little high but I can easily make a lower mount if I want to. :)

To  norm92de:

Can you share a picture of your bracket with us ?

Thanks !

Todd,
If PPhoto Bucket will let me.

I won't have time today, very busy, but will get to it soon. :)

Here is picture of my tach. bracket. It is not much, I just happened to have some scrap alloy hanging around.

It is a little high but not as high as it looks, wide angle lens and all that. It can be mounted in front of or behind the bars. Will probably make a lower one when I can get a better piece of alloy.

Thanks for sharing those pictures, Norm.

That's a simple, sturdy bracket that anyone should be
able to make and it provides a couple of mounting options.

Nice work.

Suggest you add the pictures to the Tachometer Installation
thread in the Technical section so others will see them.

My bracket was only designed that way because I had the metal available. A piece of 3/32' thick aluminum 1.5" x 5" long would be great. Only 4 holes to drill. very simple.

It could be mounted in front of or behind the handlebars. And below the handlebar cross member on top of the risers as desired.

Adding a Tach is an awesome Idea. I always thought the 650 needed another instrumentation device or two.

I thought the same thing. So I added a tach. Once I learned a bit about the bike, especially from the readout from the tach, I discovered its not really
necessary. Although, it does look good!

I wish the bike had a fuel gauge!
