Title: How often do you check TDC?
Post by sandmanred on 10/27/17 at 07:24:30

There's a port on the front of the engine that apparently gives access to the engine case so you can find TDC.  How often is this required?

I'm creating a new engine cradle and need design proper access to this plug.  If it's infrequent (annual) I'd provide just enough clearance to fit around the plug.  So some disassembly of the engine cradle would be required to fully access it.  If it's frequent (twice a season) I'd do something to allow full removal of the plug without additional disassembly of the cradle.  And no, the cradle won't be hardboard, that's just a template  :)

Thoughts?

Is that what that is?
Never heard of that being associated with TDC.
I have been messing with these engines for quite a few years and I have never needed that.

I thought that was a plug for the oil galley where they connected two lines.

The circled port is a pressure port.
There is no need to access it.
The timing port is on the side by your right left ankle.

I figured you have been riding bakkerds and got confused.

A PO left his mark on everything he touched.  Rounded bolts, non-stock fasteners, etc.  By that measure this plug has never been touched  ;)

Great to know, thanks for your help!

The plug can be sticky, apparently some of the mechanics on this site use a ground down disc pad to loosen it, best to get their opinion.

AntiSieze is really a great product. That's a good place to use it. It's not hard to overtighten that.

You should get a Clymer's manual ,but you also need to read about the mistakes in it posted on this site. ( when finding TDC the Clymer's tell you to rotate the motor clockwise, which is wrong! you need to rotate it the same direction the wheels turn -counter clock wise.

The timing port on my engine is little more than finger tight. It never has come loose. And of course it is never a problem to remove.

I always check the angle when I park the bike. Consequently, I don't think it needs to be very tight.

Good idea to get a manual.  They are on closeout at BikeBandit so I got one on order.
