Title: Timing Chain Time Post by Skip86 on 10/03/17 at 15:24:01 I still have my 86 Savage, but its timing chain time... Where's the best chain? The suzuki place here said a chain with a connecting link,I think they're mistaken... Want to do the verslavy mod also, how much? Thanks :) |
Title: Re: Timing Chain Time Post by verslagen1 on 10/03/17 at 15:31:21 not roller link chain... it's a continuous silent chain. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1180206459 |
Title: Re: Timing Chain Time Post by Skip86 on 10/03/17 at 15:56:23 I haven't been on in awhile, but how do i get a a tensioner mod done? The suzuki dealer locally keeps trying to get me to buy some timing chain that has a master link... Guides are supposed to be $40 each... Thanks |

Yeah, it is cumbersome, but of you manage a website or a message board you can appreciate it. It greatly minimizes SPAM and other bots (not Serowbots) from sending massive amounts of SPAM messages to all of us. |

Title: Re: Timing Chain Time Post by Northwood on 02/13/18 at 05:26:12 Hi guys. I just recieved a new cam chain. I thought it was endless, but it appears to have a rivet link. A final chain is easy, it has a stop on the pins so you cant overdo it. This one doesn't. Any suggestions on how to assemble it so it wont bind? The engine head is apart. Thanks, |
Title: Re: Timing Chain Time Post by Dave on 02/13/18 at 05:55:23 I know nothing about how to spin a cam chain rivet properly....without a tool. I suggest you send it back to where you got it.....and buy a nitrided chain from Lancer. http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1455475035 |

The chain is from DID. Sending it back will cost $20-25. Purchasing a chain in US will be too expensive. Lets say double up :O I hope someone will chime in with a good idea :) |
Title: Re: Timing Chain Time Post by verslagen1 on 02/13/18 at 12:04:00 Is it possible they sent you the wrong chain? Our chain is a "silent chain" not a roller link chain. |
Title: Re: Timing Chain Time Post by ohiomoto on 02/13/18 at 12:07:58 They make tools similar to what you would use to install a press fit master link on a bicycle. The tool has a block in the middle to keep the plates from binding when you press the pin in. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bRXFBiqFTWI |

The chain is ok. Like this http://www.mpsracing.com/images/products/Suzuki/cam_chain1.jpg And a link like this http://images.wemoto.com/full/CHAIN_CAM_LINK/10026318.jpg Will it be ok to assemble the chain and tap the pins gently with a hammer? I can also insert a thin, removable shim between two of the plates. Like a valve gauge blade. |
Title: Re: Timing Chain Time Post by ohiomoto on 02/13/18 at 12:30:16 Probably not a hammer. You want to get some sort of a chain press or chain crimper. Or maybe use a vise in some fashion to press the link in before you install the chain. |
Title: Re: Timing Chain Time Post by justin_o_guy2 on 02/13/18 at 12:36:21 The cost of a chain failure would make the cost of getting the right chain would be something to consider. |
Title: Re: Timing Chain Time Post by Northwood on 02/13/18 at 13:22:47 The other links are riveted like a normal final chain. A dent (lack of vocabulary) on each side of the pin end. https://www.japbikespares.com/media/catalog/product/cache/1/image/9df78eab33525d08d6e5fb8d27136e95/h/o/honda-xr350r-83-86-forseti-hy-vo-cam-chain-82rh-2015-108l-camshaft-timing-02.551.jpg Could be made on my chain with a hammer. Of course it should be done properly, thats why I ask these questions ;) And this is the right chain - but with a link. |
Title: Re: Timing Chain Time Post by Northwood on 02/14/18 at 15:40:28 The operation was performed today with no complications at all. The patient survived and are doing fine. It really was no big deal. I assembled the link. Pressed the side plate onto the pins with blows from a hammer. Placed a nut on top so I could countersink the plate. Hit both side of each pin with a hammer and a mandrel. Done! Guess which link is the one ;) |
