Title: Glen Curtis Museum, Hammondsport, NY.
Post by badwolf on 09/28/17 at 15:56:57

If anyone finds themselves near the finger lakes in central NY, The Glen Curtis Museum north of Bath in Hammondsport NY on rt 54 is worth the stop. Old motorcycles, old airplanes, and cars and a boat! Old engines from cars, m/c's, airplanes, and marine (even a 4360!)
Here is a picture of the m/c Glen Curtis rode to a WORLD SPEED RECORD on Ormond beach, FL in 1907. Not a land speed record, "THE" WORLD SPEED RECORD! 136 mph in 1907 was twice as fast as the airplanes of that time!http://u.cubeupload.com/badwolf244/WP20170828006.jpg
V-8, air cooled, shaft drive, foot brake against the rear tire, and check out those handlebars!!!
Here is a picture of a girl working in a drone engine plant during WW2. See if you can guess who she is BEFORE you read the poster.http://u.cubeupload.com/badwolf244/WP20170828018.jpg

Overall a great place to spend a afternoon.

Been there - LOVED IT !!

I was watching a Jay Leno vid the other night about bikes and he stated that Glenn Curtiss invented the motorcycle twist throttle.

8-)

They were working on the P-40 in the shop while I was there and the guys gave me a guided tour of the plane

You really have to look around there, you where in the shop but missed the seeing the four man crew racing  boat that hangs on the rear wall ,it was made  in the early 1900's with a hull of pressed  paper for light weight !

My son goes to RIT and I drive up there a few times a year for a visit. Hammondsport is right along the route, so I'll make a point of stopping in. I wasn't aware that it even existed...but it has everything I love - bikes and planes.

Just for fun check out "paper railroad wheels" invented in 1860's and used on early Pullman cars.
