Title: Tick one from my bucket list!
Post by zipidachimp on 09/27/17 at 23:23:03

Just spent the last 4 days, and 2400 kms, driving(!) through the Canadian Rockies. I can't begin to describe how beautiful this corner of the world is, you can see it all on u-tube. Massive mountains, beautiful lakes.
I now understand why most bikes I see on the road are HDs or BMWs.  You need an engine that can easily lope (or loaf) along at 60-70 without breaking a sweat, 8 hours/day, a break after 4 hrs,  is a hard slog, enjoyed not endured.
I've been here 20 years, but only had a car I'd take out of town in the last year and a half.
Totally enjoyed, but glad I'm home!  8-)

You should know that : With the 25 tooth F/pulley , your LS-650 will run along at 70-75mph with no sweat ... (might perspire a little on really looooong mountain grades) and still run up-hill in 5th gear just fine.  ;)

I crossed the Ozarks last summer while packed for a week  (w/tent and sleeping gear) and never had any thought of needing more motor (75-80mph Super-Slab Style).   8-)

Year before last I did almost the same trip on my Harley and melted the guts in the rear muffler...  :-[
Now the Harley has the same 12" shorty mufflers that the LS-650 does.  :)

MM: Congrats on quite an achievement! The bike may have the endurance, but I don't, lol, at least on a bike. 2 hours and I'm done.
I was getting leg cramps after 3 hours behind the wheel! Put it in 'cruise' and started doing leg exercises. Worked! Advanced age is my excuse, and I'm sticking to it!  8-)
ps: you/we should start a thread detailing the longest trips people on this board have taken. It might inspire others to be a bit more daring/adventurous on this big single! 8-)

South Tx. from Middle Tn. has been my longest so far.   Some of us are  CONTEMPLATING  meeting at a campground somewhere around the Black-Hills area ???    I would be ridding to that ... 1400-1500 miles one way .  ;)

MM and I are both in there as Ironbutts.
I guess that's better than just butt heads!

MM has a dream of going to see Mount Rushmore and the Black Hills next summer going out by way of Lancer's place.

If he extended that trip a bit he could take in Yellowstone and visit the budding supervolcano caldera that is gonna kill all of us fools eventually.

(notice I don't mention the big ditch as it is jest too far out of the way, plus erosion simply isn't my favorite thing)

If he planned it well, he could get Lancer and Verslagen to mebbe play as that is really closer to those guys than it is to MM or me.

Bucket list are wonderful things ,  I have found the more things on mine I do. ... The longer the list gets ! [ch128533]

OldFeller , you know we could put our Savages in the back of my truck or on a trailer behind your car  and campground our way along for a week or two ...

I need to get out more! on my bike! I'm embarrassed by my lack of production. My mind thinks I'm riding a grenade: blowout from a tube tire, chain tensioner at 18mm and counting! Howinell do you guys put on all those miles without incident? I'm impressed!!!! :D 8-)

w/out incident? the only thing that didn't happen (collectively) is the one where a semi puts 9 consecutive tracks over your a$$.

Stuff happens, we become educated, we go on.

Long rides are not as hard on the chain tensioner as short ones are.....we believe the problem is hot/cold cycles - not miles ridden.

It is time for you to get a modified cam chain tensioner.....then go on more long rides!

Yeah, I know -- let's see how the prostate surgery goes and how complete the crotch recovery is.   Getting sliced open and having to heal again ......  I just did that.   Now I gotta  go do it again.

I think the recovery process on this one writes the story on these long term mega trips.

Well , ya put them in gear , and don't hit the brake unless some goon stops in front of ya .

Letting the Holy-Sprit guide ya , is kinda like your Bucket-List ...yea ... The more ya do , the longer the job/list gets .   Just have faith nothing will happen and twist the throttle .  ;)   We're not in charge of time or life anyway ...  8-)   but keeping your maintenance  up is still  mandatory !

ZChimp

While ya got the cam-tensioner out , notice how strong the spring is .   Look at the bottom of the plunger ... see those teeth that keep the plunger from backing up ...
Ask yourself ... "Why in the world do ya need to push the plunger out hard-enough to not need the teeth ... when ya have the teeth ?  "

Now , if ya want the cam chain and tensioner to last longer ... quit pushing/stretching/wearing  on it  so hard .   It don't have to be under so much pressure , but does need enough to take-up the slack.  Not shorter spring ... weaker spring !  ;)
