Title: 55 mph front tire failure
Post by pg on 09/25/17 at 07:41:02

Yesterday I experienced a front tire failure at 55 mph. It felt like the wind was blowing hard from the left for 5 seconds then bam..... It pulled me off the road to the right into a field. Not sure if this is what you are supposed to do, but I grabbed the clutch, pumped the back brakes, and it steered itself 30 yards off the road to the right. If I was going to completely lose control I was prepared to push the bike to the left and go as far right from as I could. I was able to keep it up right, but holy $hit. I looked at the tire and it looked just fine. I think I'm going to move onto something with aluminum wheels and tubeless tires.

Best regards,

You are lucky if the beads stayed in place......when they come off the tire just wanders around aimlessly - and there is no control at all.

I am glad you got of of it without falling over......a 55mph skid is never a good thing.

I have a friend who just converted his Triumph spoked wheel to tubeless.....but the rim has shoulders like a tubeless rim.  I don't know if the Savage rims can be converted safely.

Most of the '80's GS series uses a similar wheel that'll fit on the savage.
The GS450 has a disc that's the same thickness but needs the diameter cut down.

pq, thank God you are ok. And thanks for letting us know what it is like. I hope to never experience it, but hopefully will be better prepared now for such an event.

No didn't poof.  I'm going to look at better protective gear as well.  No more 3/4 egg shell for me, and the thought of 1000 cordura doesn't sound that expensive anymore.

Best regards,

Congrats on saving the day (and yourself) with some skilled riding.  It could have been so much worse it makes feel a little queasy just reading about it.  Glad you're OK.  Do you have any info about the tire you can share like was it old, worn, new, did it get punctured or did it fail in some other way etc.

Yea  PG

I love my LS but all my other bikes have mag wheels .    The LS will too if I fall into a deal on a pair of them GS wheels someday.

Glad your still LIVING and LEARNING !    :)

What do ya think initiated the failure ?  I had a similar failure (puncture) on the rear once and the rear brake by it's self kept me strait till I got stopped.

I inspected the tire and it couldn't see any abnormalities.  I suspect it had to do with the spokes.  I remember looking at the rim strips the last time the tire was changed, the old ones were a bit chewed up.  I cut off the gas idled away whatever was in the carb.  I put it up for the time being.

Best regards,

Front tire failure is usually the prelude to a bad get off.
I'm glad you got away with it.
Knowing what did it could help us all avoid it.

FYI there is still gas in the bottom of the carb. It's mostly below the jets so is should be fine. Still, I'd at lease run it on full choke till it runs out.

I'd open the bowl drain.
I hope you air the tube up to see what happened.

I had my back go out while riding to work.
It went squirrelly in a subtle way, to wanting to run out from under me in a few seconds....
Very much like hitting black ice.
Front would be a lot worse I imagine

And people wonder why I obsess over cast/tubeless .
The HOV lane I was in last week has a 3' concrete barrier on the left and 70mph cars on the right. A blowout here would result in my cremation a few days later. I'll be modifying my riding habits!!! 8-)

We still don't know what caused it.
