Title: Barn find?
Post by zipidachimp on 09/11/17 at 19:23:03

Actually found on CL.  1983 Honda shadow VT500, 3800 kms. $1800
Was owned by guy in poor health, put it away, died, sold by estate to current owner.
Asking some questions before I decide to view.
I've owned 2 of these, Ascot and Shadow.
Any comments? 8-)

Yeah, don't turn it over before you oil it.
And I would have the plugs out and roll it after I oiled it.

sold the Ascot due to personal difficulties, sold the shadow due to the end of a transit strike. All 20 + years ago. Investigating possible ignition problems of these models and lack of parts of same. Will keep updating. 8-)

I heard those ascots were fantastic singles.

Best regards,

From what I've read, the Honda V-twins before 90 have a 3rd gear problem.  All the spares have been sold so no repair unless you get it from a scrapyard.  If it doesn't want to go into or jumps out of third, it's got the problem.

PG: the single Ascot ended in '82. V-twin 500s '83 to '86. It's the lack of ignition/elec parts that is scary. I think I'll pass. Still a nice bike though.
Took my newer S40 through the twisties this afternoon. Lots of fun! 8-)

Barn finds are hard to ignore - but the scarcity of parts and the poor resale value make it difficult to get your money back out of them.....even if you get them really cheap (unless it is a bike that is a bike that has achieved cult status).  Used road bikes are plentiful and easy to find in good shape - the market is pretty well saturated with used bikes, and the forecast is that bikes sales is dropping as the Baby Boomers are dying off or can no longer ride.

If you find a bike that is "exactly" what you want and don't care about resale....then it might be a good bike to buy and keep.

I don't know what your market is like in BC - but here is how many Honda Shadow listings there are in the Cincinnati Craigslist - if you try to sell your bike this is the kind of competition you are up against!

it's pretty much the same here: lots of choice now that Fall has arrived. The one I like, but is too heavy for me is the Spirit model before it went shaft drive.
If I were a lot younger, I'd be more willing to take a chance.
I'm really tempted to look at a GS500 and move the pedals forward. Lots under $3000. 8-)
Oddly, there are always half a dozen S40s available, some at really good prices!

Barn finds are always tempting , but it has to be the right bike too or something really cool or valuable. I won't drag home junk anymore. I have enough bikes , only 7 at present! It's really hard to say NO when they say take for free !

Speaking of "Barn Finds".... I just got back from local friend's place... 1953 BSA C-11 that has been stashed since 1970... missing the origional speedo and front fender. BUT origional carb, air cleaner etc..... 8-)

Yep, I just got one of those a few months ago.  A 1962 Suzuki Hillbilly!  It is an 80cc on/off road thingy - dual rear sprocket and a high mounted front fender.  It needs crank seals, and the good news is the case doesn't have to be split to replace them.
