Title: What you do if you had money, time & skills?
Post by IslandRoad on 09/09/17 at 00:09:54

I came to motorcycling late ... like a year ago, at age 47. I've come to love riding, learning about bikes (especially cruisers, 'standards' and their variations) ... more especially singles - and making simple mods to my bike. If I had money, time and skills I'd make a bike like the one in the attached photo.

What would you do?

If our beloved little bikes butt rivet you after a few hours, that one will probably do it in an hour or less.

Hahaha ... that's been my main issue since I got the S40. I have put a lot of thought and time into resolving it ... still working on it  :)

If I had enough money for multiple bikes, the one pictured would just be one of them. Probably for having a coffee in town, and back again!

I just love the look of it, as an object  ;)

That's a great look. And the Savage lends itself well to the design. Indeed, you're not going to be spending hours in that seat. But then, I spent hours at a time in the saddle of a hardtail '56 FLH, cuz that's all Harley made at the time. It did however have a very well sprung seat.

I'd build a 652cc 70's style standard and on the cheap! Ha, ha...

Actually, I'd build some sort of board tracker style bike.

Hours at a time on a hardtail! - That's impressive! :)

The board trackers look amazing too. They really speak of their era.

I would build a shop and buy the equipment for building bikes.
And finish all my bikes and then build some more. Using ideas & skills I learned over the years so I could put myself on my own list of what I call
"Next Level Builders" someday.

Sounds perfect  ;)

Yeah my list of next level builders grows & grows but my name is nowhere to be found , it's still on the hobbiest list , but it's truely a time & money issue , skills can be learned or faked (having someone else do it) !
In my heart I am a builder , part of a worldwide network of builders.

Super smooth lines over the front tire up the forks over the bars sweeping down the tank & seat up & over the rear tire/fender. Looks fast just sitting there. Shapes & Lines very nice !

I've been looking at it and trying to think how I would 'improve' it. But, I really can't find anything. I was gonna pick on the chrome head covers, but then you would have to attack the tool box, then the headlight  ...  and that would just leave the forks all shiny on their own!

It reminds me of when I do a rough hand sketch of an idea for a logo or design. Something about the sketch might really work but I decide it needs 'cleaned up' - that never works. Sometimes a thing just works as it is.

I/R , Sometimes it's just about keeping it simple , function before form and it just happens.

One of my regrets is never learning to 'weld'. I bought a cheap welder a while back, but the garage I rent would need rewiring, and the landlord might regret the rise in power consumption.
Sticking a midsize sportbike engine in a 'feetforward' frame is another object to accomplish! 8-)

Funny you mention that. I bought a small welder a few weeks ago for the first time, have done a couple small jobs recently ... nothing that depends on the integrity of the welds though. It's very satisfying  8-)

"Sticking a midsize sportbike engine in a 'feetforward' frame ..."

That sounds like the Vulcan 500  ;)

I would build a mud brick house and an aeroplane.

If I was young, healthy and strong again, I would build a log home with a VERY LARGE garage using squared off logs to make stacking them easier, AND take welding and machining classes so I could do more on bikes.  Then I would need to populate the garage with building tools.
Oh, one more thing...buy a helicopter!

I think machining is probably the thing I wish the most I could have been introduced towhen I was  in school. I didn't even know it was a thing. In hindsight I think it could have really caught my imagination.

If I had the money today, I'd buy a good lathe.

good one! I bought a Vulcan 500 in '15 and sold it a year later. Overweight and overlong. It was too pretty to cut up, so sold it to a noob for a profit.
That's the idea though.  FZ07 engine in foot forward, short wheelbase frame, woohoo! 8-)
GS500 w/feet forward!

I sat on a new 2016, Vulcan 500 when I was looking for a bike. They had one in the same showroom a the S40. I also felt it was a bit long, and felt heavy ... especially at 500 cc.

Whole different story when I sat on the S40  8-)

When I heard the Rebel 500 was coming, got really excited, but then Honda did the unforgivable and created the ugliest bike in the world, with MID controls. Can no one get it right? Jeez!!!! 8-)

Haha, No, they can't! If only they would come to my place, measure me, and ask my opinion ... then we could get this done properly  8-)

the 'street twin' is nice, but insurance over 750cc here is expensive. A street twin 650 would be ideal, but Triumph and all the rest don't care!  Screw 'em. I'll stick with modifying older bikes to suit me. Cheers! 8-)

Lancer and Versey just left my place to get out in front of the Hurricane rain coming in.   They have two bikes that looked a lot like that first picture you posted  ... but ... they got them big pistons , super cams , special carbs and such in the mix too.

If I could get the time set aside I'd line-up a string of campgrounds so I could take my Savage for a 10 day cruise !  ;)
