Title: trans issues
Post by mommas thumper on 08/28/17 at 04:47:57

good day all have a question regarding the S40 we have a 2014 Suzuki S40 with 6600 KMS that is currently down for repair with trans problems.it would not go into neutral at times and would stick in gear(no down or upshifting)it is sitting at a suzuki dealer they have found a bent shift fork an damaged shift collar. My question is what would cause this?I am assuming it happened before we bought it as my wife has only put 200 kms on it and is a new rider not hard on the bike.
she is very disappointed in this bike having sold a Honda rebel to buy a newer bike with less kms  she thought she would be good for a few years with out issues
sorry for long post

Someone stomped on the shifter or the parts inside were rejects. I've been here for about twelve years and seen all kindsa problems, and that's a new one.

The Savage is not prone to transmission problems.

Some folks don't understand the motorcycle transmission, and if the bike doesn't want to go into first gear.....they stomp until it does.  The solution really is a much kinder/gentler method - you either let the clutch out and pull the lever back in and shift while the gears are rolling to a stop - or you use your leg to roll the bike forward or back an inch.....this allows the "dogs" to get in alignment and shift easily (without stomping).

I was kind of wondering the reject part theory as well I am considering contacting Suzuki regarding this issue
Momma is considering looking for a different bike now. hope she changes her mind once we get it back

Exactly what Dave said.  Mine snapped one day.  I could see the linkage had been bent for a while and it just gave out.  I got a linkage for less than $10 and it's perfect.

That said, it would take a lot of force to bend the shift fork and a damaged shift collar.  I would ask to see those parts.

they are saving me the parts
I know the owner of the shop and they so far have been very good to me

I don't know of a shop that knows to use Rotella T 15/40 oil. And some people Have put the filter in backwards, usually an engine killer.
Have them check the shifter rod. I really don't know how anyone could stomp hard enough to bend stuff inside, because the rod will bend. And who can lift that hard?

A bent rod causes plenty of problems.
Start with that.

You want to screw anybody's bike up just walk over and stomp on the shifter.

It can bugger-up the best of bikes and it's not the bike's fault.

I would bet it happened in the last 200Km .....

I doubt internal stuff is hurt.

thanks for all the replies so far I will check the rod myself when I go down to look at it in next few days still waiting for parts to come in
and they have taken it apart and found these parts the fork is bent and the shift collar has some funny marks on it from hanging up so it is getting replaced for insurance sake

I have to assume they were talking about internal stuff and not the external shifter mech.

So to "fix" this and maybe discover it, they've had to split the cases.  You must have deep pockets.
Did they show you the damage?
I would be very skeptical of such a diagnosis.

It's very rare that the internals have ever been damaged or at least never reported.
A few of the early bikes had issues with the external shifter mech.

I've horsed my bike around pretty hard, and seen idiots come and go for twelve years , people stomping, literally stomping on the shifter, and nobody has Ever damaged the guts of the transmission.
Eegor bought a bike that had bearings and stuff messed up, but that was from the belt tension.
I have no idea what was done to cause such, unless it's been dropped at speed and the shifter shoved Up,
I'd be in the shop, looking at the bent part and knowing that it is what was in my transmission.
I've Accidentally shifted into first when I shifted my weight at a light, and killed it. So, I'm not able to understand how it's possible to put a shift fork in a bind that will bend it.
How long was the bike in the shop before they told you it was a bent fork?

One thing that likely could happen to a transmission, could be if someone left foot pressure on the shift pedal after the shift...or the lever was binding a bit and kept pressure on the shift fork all the time.  The transmission gears/dogs are held in place by small steel balls and springs, and the shifting fork is supposed to be centered in the groove and not touching either side once the shift is completed.  If the shifting fork is rubbing on one side of the groove - it can overheat and possible warp.

Evidence of this would be a worn surface on the shift fork and mating gear, bluing from heat, or a rough surface where it should be smooth.  This most likely would have created a noise that would have been noticeable.

the bike has been in the shop for over a week they checked all external linkage and where able to get it to hang up and determined it was internal.hope to get down there later today to look things over
