Title: dyna muffler with rail #
Post by JLC on 08/25/17 at 13:09:51

I just bought two HD mufflers with mounting rail, which I hope are the "right" ones for the Savage. The number stamped on the mufflers is HARFXD1584.

I think the numbers can vary depending on model, country, and maybe even state. If you have an image, you could post it here. We might be able to tell from that. If they are from a Dyna, and have a rail then you're probably in pretty good shape.

Looked online and found it as a Dyna muffler, so I am good! Just need an adapter.

There are a number of ways to fit the Dyna. It's worth a look around the forum. Adapters aren't always as simple as they look. Sometimes you have to cut an inch off the header pipe, and sealing them can be fun! The Dyna is not a direct fit. First of all it's imperial where's the bike is metric. There's also an angle on the end of the stock muffler that isn't on the Dyna. It's a great muffler for this bike but takes a little finessing to get it mounted leak-free.

I used a method from this forum to make my own gasket from a ribbed tin can and got the Dyna to fit directly onto the header. It still takes a bit of wrangling. Had to rotate the header slightly and could only use one mounting bolt for the muffler. It took me a couple of goes but very happy with the result (no silicon or cement, and left the header intact). Then I bought a 4" heat shield to cover the clamp.

If you haven't already, it really is worth reading some of the threads about the Dyna [ch9786]

What kind of heat shield did you get to cover the modified section?

Eegore asked:

Several of us have used the Cobra Universal heat shield.

Bought new it on Ebay. Came packaged as Emgo. 2" diameter x 4". I squeezed it to wrap around better. Bought a smaller hose clamp too. It only had one attachment point so I stuffed a little packing under to stop it rattling. Fur tat, I used a snippet of leftover fibreglass rope that seals a wood heater door.

It's not great quality, but was cheap enough to buy another one later.

I paid $60 for both mufflers, which was the best deal I could find locally. One muffler is perfect, the other has a slight scuff. I plan to buy a cobra heat shield, but I am still thinking about an adapter or the "can method" to get the Dyna muffler to fit the Savage exhaust pipe.

I just ordered the Cobra 2"x7" exhaust shield.

Thanks to all who responded, for the valuable information given.

Maybe the Ryca adaptor might work , IDK , I'm sure someone here knows !

I just put a Ryca adapter on my bike a few weeks back.  Yes, it was pricey at $50 plus shipping, but I didn't feel like mucking around anymore.

The (rather crappy) adapter the PO made was leaking from me wiggling things around when I made my mid controls.  (Give the PO credit though, it didn't leak until I messed around with it.) After a couple of failed attempts to seal things up and lots of snap, crackle and pop'ing, and a big blue spot on my muffler, I was happy to give Ryca my money for a well designed piece.

I used a couple of HD clamps and a little bit of muffler sealant to make sure I wouldn't have anymore issues.  The adapter fits perfect, it chromed and comes with a chrome clamp.  Considering what you get and that it works perfect with very little effort, the price isn't really that bad.

Yep.  Along with this: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000BOAZM8/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

And a quick trip my local HD shop for a couple of these: https://houseofharley.com/Harley-Davidson-Muffler-Exhaust-Clamp.html

Thanks... I ordered the adapter and sealer, will stop at the HD dealer today to buy the clamps. Thanks again.

I bought the clamps this morning... Wow! Just shy of $18 for two "genuine Harley Davidson" clamps. Ironic they are going to be fitted to a "lowly S40"!

The "genuine" Harley exhaust clamps are really well made, and probably one of the most affordable parts they sell.  (Probably because there is no orange and black paint on them).

You will probably have to cut a small shim from a soda can get the clamp to tighten down on the adapter.

Thanks... I don't doubt the clamps are well designed and made, as they should be for the price!

I never could get the can to stop leaking so I used a few wraps of aluminum foil and high temp silicone. Been leak free for a few years now!

Good advice. I'll see what I have to do to make sure there are no leaks!

Start the bike and let it idle while you hold a candle around the joint. You'll know immediately if there's a leak. Obviously you want to try this someplace out of the wind.
