Hey y'all -

Stripped a screw rather badly on the master cylinder, after WD40, steel wool, and a few other tries. Any idea on how to get this out? Happened during a brake change. Thanks!

Pin punch
Gently push the edges into place
WD is a lousy penetrating oil.
Kroil or 1/2 and 1/2 acetone and transmission fluid.
The screws are JIS, not Phillips.
Grind the tip of the screwdriver till the X fills up the slots.

And sometimes there is just nothing you can do.

You don't way what screw it is - so I assume it is one on the reservoir cover.

If you can't get it out - carefully drill the head off. Once the head is gone it will likely back out easily once you have the cover removed. Then get a replacement screw.

What screw are you talking about?
Did you strip the thread or the head?

Sometimes, adding heat will expand the outside body and allow the screw to rotate a little easier. Do NOT use a flame to do the heat, use your wife's haredryer (but don't tell her!). Use PB Blaster - best penetrating oil ever!

Why Start with the big hammers?
Unless he's ripped the head up too bad, the easy start is gently reshape the edges of the X,and get some acetone/transmission fluid mix penetrating oil.
If he has a way to slot it, and the X is out of the question, try that.

Excellent idea!

On this project I would not use an impact anything!

First warm things up with hot hair dryer, and spray or drip a few drops of good penetrating oil

Second, try (as someone suggested) to clean out the slots, and make sure you have a good fit with the screwdriver.

Third, try drilling off the top of the screw - use the left-hand bit if you can, remove cap and then try to use needle-nosed vice grips on exposed screw. Reapply heat.

Apply
Wait a day
Repeat
Unless you created the problem with the screwdriver tip, hopefully it really isn't frozen in. Did you get the other one out okay?
Don't use That screwdriver..
Get both sides soaking, it's not something that HAS to happen before you can ride, unless you've left details out.
Can you straighten out the screw head and reestablish the X?
And I Would use an impact.
But knowing How is important.
Impacts break things loose when straight torque will twist it off.
