Title: drill out stock muffler ?
Post by tomatolord on 08/22/17 at 08:00:41

My son drilled out the stock muffler and now it sounds just like a Harley at idle, which I read was NOT good.

4 holes in the cap

We did drill out the pilot plug, which helped BEFORE we did muffler.

Now it is running lead again due to the muffler change, which we expected.

The question is if it sounds like a Harley is that bad?

Yes we are going to buy jets and rejet it

I don't know what "sounds like a Harley" means. A Harley is a V-Twin on a single crank pin with cylinders at a 45 degree angle. The Savage is a single. They can't sound alike.

If you mean it's now louder - well yes - you punched a hole(s) into your muffler. As a result it is now loud.

Whether this is "good" or not is up to you. If you like the resulting sound, it's good. If now it's too loud, well, that's not good.

Any change in the intake or exhaust system does require rejetting.

As long as
You don't let it idle on the sidestand
And keep the RPM up to 1100,
It's okay.

Is that where the Leamings are?

Do they really run off the cliff?

Tomatolord, it's been said on this site "Don't try to make the bike sound like a Harley". That refers to the idle speed. You don't want that chugging, intermittent-sounding idle that Harley's are known for. Think more like a loud sewing machine. A good steady rhythm.

Volume is a separate matter. As Gary pointed out, volume is usually related to airflow - re-jetting/carb-tuning is the solution to that.

You need to also be mindful of the other end- the intake. If you increase the exhaust beyond a certain point you may also need to look at your air filter.

I think a few holes in the stock muffler should be tunable with the stock air filter. Others, I'm sure, will correct me if I'm incorrect on that.

yes that makes sense now...we don't have a tach yet so we have to get that to set everything correctly.

I have done all this on dirt bikes - jets pipes airbox so I am familiar with the processes involved but every bike is a little different.
