Title: 2007 Harley Davidson Sportster XL883L
Post by JLC on 08/12/17 at 19:25:08

Just bought a 2007 Sportster... 1183 miles on the clock. That is not a misprint: less than 1200 miles in ten years! The warning stickers are still on the bike, and the original tires still have their nubs intact. Yes, I know I will have to change the tires as the rubber is quite hard.

By the way, I still have the 2015 S40, I already have more miles on it than the Sportster has :), and I plan to keep both.

It's still new,,,
I hope you got it super cheap.

Cheap enough... I just don't understand people who buy a motorcycle and then don't use it, but don't sell it when they stop using it either! The last time that bike was registered was in 2011. It has been sitting in a garage since then. I just finished checking it over... quite a few loose bolts, oil change just done, everything works, will be checking new tires Monday.

If stuff is loose in only 5,000 miles I'd be wondering about how carefully it was assembled. Guzzis, as upper crust as they are are commonly not greased well in the head bearings.

Actually, loose within 1200 miles... I wonder if this bike was ever checked after it left the dealership when new. I assume everything was tight when it left the factory. Don't know for sure.  If things get loose again, I'll start using Loctite!

In the late '60"s I had a friend who brought a 350cc Honda, it came from the dealership, he rode it once and returned it. A few years ago a workmate brought a 250cc Suzuki V Twin cruiser, despite my suggestion he start on a GN250, he had one bad experience going on a so called group/social ride, despite my suggestion he get used to it first. Then followed endless professional tuition, but it sat in his shed for five years until he sold it to another workmate.

I got my first bike last year. It was a  (2010 Ninja250R). It had 600 kms on the clock! That's 100kms per year!! It was absolutely spotless. I don't understand it either.

I switched to the S40 after about 4 months  8-)

I've been riding for about a year and so far have done a bit over 10k kms

Right now there is a 2016 Kawasaki Vulcan S ABS for sale in Boulder, CO, with 42 miles on the clock. The lady who bought it drove it the 42 miles from the dealership to her home, and it has been sitting in her garage for 1 1/2 years!

Local dealer says he gets bikes all the time with only 500 miles on them. Some 10 years old.
One local guy told me he bought a Speed Triple with 5 miles on it. PO locked up the brake on his first ride and dropped it. Enough scratches that the insurance company totalled it.

I think motorcycling is one of those things that people get the idea they want to do it, but can't really give it a go unless they buy a bike. Some of them decide on the way home "Nup, this isn't my thing." Then they put off selling it because they can't face the reality that they just dropped 20% of the sale price on the way home. eventually (five years later) the get over it - that and the fact they've now dropped another 30% or so.

It took me a while to get comfortable on the bike. I found riding felt natural but I was very uncomfortable on the Ninja (in any context other than gliding through the twisties - which I now understand is exactly what it was built for). As soon as I sat on an S40 I knew I'd found my bike. Still modding it for comfort and style though! - and loving it [ch9786]

This forum helped me a great deal in choosing the S40. And as I've become more experienced I've come to appreciate what a little gem of a bike it really is.

^ Couldn't be more true. I'm always browsing used bike ads and the number one thing is "I just don't ride it enough" because they purchased it on a whim and it ends up just collecting dust.

Was tempted to buy this until I realised I was 73 and looking at 560 lbs of form over function. Rats! 8-)

I wonder if 'function over form'  is something that unites Savage/S40 owners. Not that it's a bad looking bike, but it does lack something of the wow-factor of many other cruisers. I personally love the ground clearance, weight, handling and simplicity much more than having people admire my bike - although, people do admire it!

I do like the 883 HD but I couldn't see the point of going from a 650 to an 883 ... with all the extra weight to go with it.

If I ever did buy a HD (which is unlikely) I'd opt for one of the lighter bikes up around 1200 cc. But honestly, if I was gonna spend that kind of money I'd prefer to work the S40 (rebore etc) and just get a bit more or of that - and probably save myself a fist full of bucks too  8-)

Just thinking out loud  :)

IMO, with the light weight, short wheelbase, the S40  really isn't a cruiser, more a 'standard'. Wish Suzuki realised this. Put a flatter seat on it, nicer tank, call it a '2018' model. 8-)

Fair call. I always thought it didn't really sit properly next to the M50 and C90. Calling it the S40 was just a marketing move to make it an 'entry level' cruiser and to consolidate their range.

I thought of doing all the mods on the S40 too (big bore kit, etc), but I bought the Sportster for the same amount of money it would have cost me to upgrade the LS650. As for the weight of the Sportster, I am 69 years old and only 5' 3" tall, and so far I have had no problem riding it. I believe the Sportster is the lighter of the HD bikes, unless the Street 500/750 are lighter.

JLC: you have my admiration!  How is the weight moving it around a garage?  Access to my rented garage is through a 34" wide gate, uphill!  8-)

I can move it around the garage fine, but I admit I don't have to push it uphill!

Zip, That's my sporty minus the sissy bar ! The 02 was about 505 lbs the later rubber mounted engine models started at about 560lbs . But mine gots lots of mods , but I can tell you it's a great bike even if it's a tad heavier than I prefer. It eats up country roads but it requires some sweat to keep up to lighter bikes. It builds muscle and skill. But I much prefer my 308 lb Savage/RYCA tracker for the nastier twisties , it requires far less effort and can be ridden faster !

I had a 1200 Sportster (2004 model) before I got a 883.    It was fast  :)  , the hot-rod of the Harley Family till the liquid cooled bunch came along.
The 1200 I had tore-up from doing 2000 to 4000 in 2nd and third gear trying to keep-up with a bunch of SAVAGES .
Best I can figure , the .0002" or .0003" of play in-between the Crank-shaft and the Drive/Alt. Sprocket must have increased with the up and down rpm's.    The splines , simply "Disappeared" !  :o    Well , there were traces of them in the primary oil when I drained it , so technically they really didn't "Disappear" , but they were gone when I looked to see why the starter couldn't turn the motor.    ;D

Same motor /  883 = 3" pistons  / 1200 = 3.5" pistons + high test fuel.

I'll stick to my Savages!  Unless, of course, a reduced price Rebel 500 appears on CL. Ugly bike, but nice motor. 8-)

I just came back from a back to back ride, first with the S40, then the Sportster 883. Both bikes have similar mileage (just shy of 1300).  My S40 is definitely more nimble in the twisties, but I don't like the forward controls, and I owned the bike long enough to know I never will. I am much more confident doing slow, tight turns with my new (to me) 2007 Sportster than my S40, I think thanks to the handlebars and the standard foot controls on the Sportster. Contrary to what I anticipated, the Sportster feels much more powerful than the S40, despite the increased weight.

I agree with everything you said, but my age, condition and logic say the S40 is the bike for me.
Neither of my bikes are stock, just one appears so.
Cheers!  8-)

The only mod I am going to do to the S40 is the front Kawasaki pulley. I already have the part, but I have been too lazy to install it!  :)

883R price has dropped to 5 even. surprised this hasn't sold in first week. I could buy this and stick it in my living room. Screw the landlord!  8-)

Wave $ 4250 under his nose and see if he bites , if not leave him your number and walk away. Not one penny more than that !

Is that VIP status or are they afraid you'll die in line?
Paperwork on that has got to be murder.
