Title: Starter motor voltage
Post by marekbuk on 07/27/17 at 12:44:41

guys - anyone with an idea why that when I switch on the ignition and before pressing the starter button I measure 5.5v at the starter terminal
? - jumping to 12.5 v when the starter button is pressed.

A slightly fried starter solenoid. Not fried enough that it has stopped to function, but fried enough that it has a voltage leak. If you disconnect the signal (ground or switch side) does the voltage leak go away?

Dirty lead?

check your ground.

Exactly where are you measuring?

I'm measuring at the terminal post on the starter motor

Gary! - I just disconnected the switch and ground side and still get the leak when switching on the ignition - puzzling as there is no other connection to the solenoid

You could try disconnecting the negative battery cable and then reconnect it to see if it clears the problem. But even if it does it will probably return after one starting cycle. Is there a drain on the battery?

Don't sweat the momentary spike. Get the other issues figured out.
The battery is not right.
Is it lead acid?
Checked the water?
Had it tested?
Start with the battery
Then see

Gary - disconnected the battery and charged it - no change

Justin - it's got a posh Li-Lon lightweight battery fitted - it's even got a test button on it with x3 blue led's showing state of the battery - fitted by previous owner when he 'chopped' the bike

I've disconnected all the loom connections, cleaned and refitted with no change

Posh gets a warranty.
Because even Posh can fail.
Start with proving the battery.

Bike starts fine on the battery - I've cleaned the terminals - it's just annoying that there seems to be a leak to the solenoid when the ignition is switched on

Is it a Transient Reading or does it stay at five volts until you hit the button?

It stays steady at 5.5v

Is it still there after it's started?

That's something to check tomorrow- will post result

If it's there you could pull the wire and check battery voltage, rev it, see what happens. And or check current between the wire and terminal. See what current draw is happening,,

Stand it up every few minutes and let it get oil on the cam.

I can't believe It - tested this morning and no leaking voltage

Mystery unsolved
