I have been messing with the wiring on my savage. Trying to defeat the kickstand switch and such. Went to fire it up to make sure I wasn't ruining a good thing and sure enough: popped a fuse instantly.
unplug everything and try to isolate the issue.
Its the igniter. Plug in the igniter and turn the key, pop. Looked at the price of a new igniter. >:(
What happened? If it can be fixed, can someone point to a youtube or something to get me going?

I guess it pays to read up on this sight before under going repairs. leaving the key on without starting the bike tends to "fry " the igniter ( burns out the diodes ?)if you would have unplugged the igniter before working on the wiring you would have been OK.You might be able to repair it ,by replacing the burnt components (not sure).

I saw this and it made me think it could maybe be fixed. I think perhaps I'm not the guy to get it done as I don't even know how to get off that crazy coating from the underside.

That thread Vasy posted is over 7 years old. If you don't know that you are about to mess up, how are you supposed to read up on it?

Whelp! $120 for an ebay igniter and hours of headscratching later, I now know that although the connectors for the generator and the brake light switch are very similar, switching them will cause fuses to pop. So, don't do that.
