Title: Versy head plug
Post by madmikesmech on 07/09/17 at 05:50:25

Is this an indication I need to install a Versy head plug?

The linked thread below explains it well.  Given how high up it is I wouldn't jump to a head plug but I'm no expert.

Been here, done this.   ;D

You got oil leaking from the valve inspection covers.
there are also 3 sealing washers on top and you got oil leaking thru the head gasket and it will come out any of the head bolts.

Once you have one leak, it's hard to determine one from another though.
Clean, close examination of each location and you can fix each leak.
I do this...

Thanks for all the HELPFUL info guys!
Versy, I like your leak locator method![ch128077] gonna have to rig that setup to my top end.
I have a 8+ hour round trip ride planned next month

I used the Versy method to find an oil leak - just be careful not to use too much air pressure...or you could create new leaks!

I removed the chrome head covers and the vent tube at the top of the engine.  I found a piece of tubing that fit on the nipple for the vent tube, and that size just happens to be the same size as the 1/4" quick connect fittings for my air compressor - so I attached the hose to the engine vent and the fitting.  I then bled all the air out of my compressor....except for 5 pounds.  I then mixed some dish washing liquid and put it in a spray bottle.  I sprayed the area around the left front head stud expecting to find a leak there.....but it was blowing bubbles at the place just above the spark plug where the head cover mates to the cylinder head.  Evidently the sealer in this area has failed.     The Sealer is black - but kind of shiny and sticks out a bit.......I don't believe it is the factory sealant.  Regardless.....the head cover will have to come off so that I can get this sealed up.

If you don't have a compressor you might be able to use an inner tube and tire pump. Take some finagling, but it could work. Doesn't take perfection to hold five pounds.
