Title: When did you learn to ride?
Post by SALB on 07/08/17 at 11:02:26

Contemplating Oldfellers thread on the decline of new riders, I began to wonder how many actually learn prior to 30.  I was 38 when I took the test and got my endorsement.

11 years old, I had a little 2 stroke Yamaha with a 4 speed...
Dad was in Nam. I had to figure out what a clutch did on my own...
...didn't realise there were 3 more gears for couple of hours... ;D...

Had my first mini bike at 11, first motorcycle at 14, so I guess I been riding almost steady for 46 years.

54 years ago for me at age 14.  Ohio didn't have an M/C license requirement beyond a standard Driver's licence until about 4 years later when I was able to get one w/o having to take a test!

A Sears MoPed was my first, then a Honda 50.

They said they used one of my diapers for an air filter in one of the barstow to vegas runs... does that count?    ;D
So swinging on the grab bar on side hack occurred at an early age.

Then on to where I was the motor for a good 20 years or so.
College was too far to ride so I got a moped and rode that for a couple of years.

And then a long drought to my 1st savage.

14 years old riding 2 stroke, 80cc dirt bikes for about a year. Then no riding until age 46 (less than a year ago). Got my licence and a Ninja 250R for about 3 months. Then switched to the S40.

learned the basics as a kid, but my parents forbid motorbikes so I had to wait until I moved out (17 or 18yo, I forget) before I could own a motorbike. had bikes ever since but I've had some long breaks from riding. always kept the bikes though.

I learned to ride when I was in 7th grade on my dads Yamaha 125 twin and Honda 305 scrambler.....probably about 1969.  My first motorcycle of my own as a 1972 Kawasaki 125 enduro - that was followed by by several bikes that I raced motocross and hare scrambles with - then on to college and I gave up motorcycles for 35 years (in hindsight that was a big mistake).

So for this thread I posted under 20 - I believe I was 14.

49 before my bum hit leather. I  had a mate who was a long time member of a club. one day he came in to work and said that the club was about to celebrate their 10th anniversary and were trying to decide what to get to commemorate the event. As a knife maker I offered to make an anniversary knife. I made a 12 inch bowie, inlaid their logo in the handle and engraved the blade. After presenting the knife and attending a few meetings I was made a member. Wish I had learned earlier.

I'm still learning!
But had a mini bike at 11 or 12 years old (grew up in San Diego East County; very rural).  Got a Yamaha RD200 when I was 14 or 15.  Hit a car that pulled out in front of me on my XS400 and nearly got killed at age 17.  So, a long, long break until I was 44.  Took a proper MSF course and rode a 150cc scooter for a few years until I got the Savage at age 50.

I learned on a Honda CT70 during 7th grade which would have been either the fall of 1976 or spring of 1977. By the time I was in high school, there were 2 or 3 2-stroke Jap enduros and a collection of smaller UJMs in the neighborhood.

When I learned to ride, Fred Flintstone and I had to "whittle" out the wheels from a couple of rocks nearby!

Engine was pretty weak, and not much lo-end torque! Certainly no speed!

Dirt bikes and off road at about 12, and up until about 17. Didn't have my endorsement and at 17 got cited on a friend's bike for him not having it insured and me not having a helmet on.

Didn't get another of my own until I was 34, at which time I got my endorsement with my 1 and only road bike I've ever had. Been riding that bike now for the last 8+ years  8-) (even if I've only put on less than 10k miles in those 8 years at least I'm still riding)
