Title: Is it ok to use the newly changed dino Rotella oil
Post by rong on 07/03/17 at 19:50:34

Hi everyone,

As I understand it, at the end of last year, Shell was changing the oil makeup of the dino Rotella T Triple Protection 15W40.  Even the label on the bottle was changing.  At the time, I wrote the Savage website about it, and most of the responses said that they were buying all of the old version that they could so that they wouldn't have to worry about it for awhile.

Now that time has gone by, is the consensus of opinion that this new version of dino Rotella ok to use in the S40? ... Open to your thoughts.

Thanks for your help.

Ron G

Think they call it T4 15/40wt and add alittle Redline ZDDP and your good to go ! I use 1/2 to 3/4 oz. of Redline at oil change.

I have a few gallons of both T4 and T5, would it matter which was tossed in?

Do you think the T6 in 5/40 weight is OK in Texas summer heat?  Or should I run something thicker for these hottest months?

Verslagen, I know there is some discussion about adding ZDDP to some of the oils, ... but using the old Rotella T Triple Protection 15W40, most people felt it had enough ZDDP (therefore not necessary to add ZDDP).  Is it ok to assume this is also true with the new T4 (with the jaso ma designation) ?

Thanks,
Ron G

Going to thicker oil actually makes the engine hotter.
You will see an extra 10° ave over 5w-40

If you're running any hotter than I am then get your head examined.   :-?

So the T4 I have sitting out back is SAE 15W-40 "Heavy Duty Diesel" engine oil.

The JASO MA quote you provided matches almost everything listed on the DSS (MSDS) so I assume its ok.  I hope so since I have about 24 gallons of it.

I'll toss in some ZDDP as well I guess.
