Title: Rear brake squeals when used
Post by rong on 07/03/17 at 19:47:30

Hi everyone,

My 2015 S40 has about 3500 miles on it.  The rear drum brake squeals when I put on the brakes.  Does anyone know of a way to stop the rear drum brake from squealing when I use it? ... (Preferably without taking off the rear wheel)

Thanks for your help.

Yes and no.
There are a couple of causes, so 1 fix may solve it or not.
Stop hard several times and get the rear brake hot.
That drives off moisture, sometimes that's the cause.

and the no part requires a mod to the brake shoe.
all brake shoes are made with a taper leading to the braking surface.
that causes brake dust to be ground back into the shoes.
this is what causes the squeal.

take a grinding wheel and grind back the leading edge at a 45° angle to the face of the hub.
you want face to sweep the dust to the open end of the brake.
do that for both shoes.

If it's really easy to lock up you can groove the shoes and decrease your surface area.

The above suggestions are both excellent!  Both cleaning, and beveling the leading edge help.  But I also add one more thing.  I like to use a cleaner (either Xylol or Lacquer thinner) to try to get most of that oily, dusty residue out of the pads.  Also, using a fairly coarse sandpaper, I lightly score the brake surfaces to allow more gripping with less glazing.

And never wash your bike and put it away without going for a ride to dry out the rear brake.  The water in the rear hub can rust the steel wearing surface on the drum, and the rust gets embedded in the pads and can make them noisy.

Thanks for the suggestions.  I know the brake is not wet, so at some point it looks like grinding the edge of the brake to 45 degrees is the answer.

Verslagen, if I understand the shoe grinding correctly, I would want to grind the leading edge of the shoes (the width of the forward or leading edge of the shoes) so that the dust will be carried to this ground opening by the force of the moving hub.  Have I got it?

Thanks,

Care must be taken to understand which is the leading edge , and the direction the drum is passing each shoe as it rotates.on the top shoe the leading edge faces the rear of the bike, but the leading edge of the bottom shoe faces the front of the bike, when assembled.

It's not a dual leading shoe. Best I can see it only has one leading edge. The top shoe, rear edge.

Better have a good look at the drum. A bit of 80 grit whistled around might be a good idea.

Don't breathe that dust, asbestos or not, that's toxic.

If it locks up with light pressure on the pedal, now is the time to work on that.
