You have to use a 3rd party for your photos before you can move them to this site.  Something like Photobucket or Bikepics or other similar services.

You may have to wait till your post count comes up.
I can't tell you more. I don't post pictures..

Never tried from my phone, and I was unsuccessful.

if you don't have a third party server, then use the upload at the bottom of the post.  browse to the file location on your desktop.

Can't seem to get Photobucket to work or the attach feature.

It's half past bedtime here in the UK so I'll try again tomorrow.. ;D

Hmm, a Savage Wasp.

That will keep your nuts warm !  ;D

I see a air flow problem at cylinder & head !!!

Otherwise it's very cool for a scooter !

Title: Re: Newby with a 'special' S40

It needs a electric cooling fan blowing on cylinder & head or it won't live long or some flex hose to direct some air on it !

Louvers?

Title: Re: Newby with a 'special' S40
Post by batman on 07/04/17 at 18:25:40

louvers in the front panel and ducts to direct it to the head and jug,but what do you use for brakes? That thing has got to be scary fast!

Designed and fabricated in an
Acidrich environment.

There are things that can be done, but shouldn't.  This is one of those things.  Looks "deadly"!

The photo is a couple of weeks old and I've vented the front now.
I'll put some more photos of the build on if anyone's interested.
I built the original Vespa 10 years ago. I stretched it by a foot a widened it by 6 inches and it had a 200cc tuned Vespa 210 motor.
Brakes are hydraulic discs either end, SV650 monoshock.
I always wanted to put a bike engine in and the Savage just looked right.
Handling is 'interesting'...... ::)

Question I have is about the carb... does it need any jetting alterations due to running a different filter?

Title: Re: Newby with a 'special' S40

Maybe,, maybe not,,
What are you seeing that makes you think it needs to be jetted?
I like the build,
More pictures, showing the stretches, and the engineering would be good.

I'll put a few more pictures up later.

I'm not sure I do need to alter any jets etc as I've got nothing to compare it to. I'm mostly a 2-stroke bloke so jetting can mean the difference between seizing or not ;D
It's quite 'chonky' at low revs but most big cylinders are?........ my Harley Evo was anyway.
Weak normally means hotter so I thought I'd best check. The dials I've fitted have a temp quage built in so I attached it to the cylinder and it peaks at about 135 Centigrade(275f) but no idea what the running temp is.....easy with water cooled. :)

Your average temperature and humidity along with elevation above sea level, type of intake and exhaust all factor into what jets would work best on most days.
There are some really carburetor savvy guys here. I'm not one of them, dangitt..

Brakes are both hydraulic and pretty good. It's geared to be similar to the Savage. I've had 75 out of it when it had a Vespa engine but not sure I want to go any faster!  ::)

Edge of Disaster speeds would seem around sixty..
Maybe it's better than that,  but it looks kinda spooky.

With the solid bodywork and the fact that your carrying the engine weight much higher than the stock motor ,I'd be worried about what a stiff cross wind might do to the bike with the wheels being that small. From what I gather speed limits in the U.K. are somewhat less than what we see here ,If you have the bike geared like the Savage I think you could do 85+ mph  ,but you may not LIVE past 55-60. I do have a question, where is the fuel tank? and how is the fuel getting to the carb? AND yes give us more pics it looks like a fun project, no doubt it's a one of a kind custom!( almost forgot 275  is a normal head temp for the motor, but it could swing +/- 25 depending on weather/outside temps)

Hi, crosswinds are an issue on any scooter but 30bhp is fairly easy to achieve on a 225cc 2-stroke and 90mph scooters are not uncommon over here so it's 'medium safe'  :o
UK speed limit is 70mph and not strictly enforced. 80+ before you get any grief..
Fuel is in a tank in the r/h rear panel and a SV650 vacuum fuel pump does the pumping.
Photos to follow... :)

Thanks for the temp info btw.

Acidrich , the carb is tuned lean from the factory, and runs leaner from about 1000 ft down to sea level. using an after market filter sends it leaner yet. You should probable rejet if you pipes bluing badly, and maybe adjust your mixture screw first.and do the spacer mod,( It's in the tech. section) then maybe up a size or two on the main jet ?

Cheers Mr Batman,
It's going on it's first long run tomorrow from Birmingham to sunny  Cleethorpes in Lincolnshire. I'm fully expecting something to go wrong but fingers crossed.....
I've oiled the filter and made an aluminium surround to choke it off a bit so that may help.
There's a slight wisp of smoke when stationary from somewhere above the head so I've re torqued the head bolts but can't see any oil.....?
I'll be asking a few more questions no doubt but thanks for all the info. :)

Sorry can't tell much from your pic. Smoke -breather hose off the top of the head? / the bolt in place that held the front of the chrome head cover on the left side?(just in front of the compression release) it also holds the head cover down ,it needs to be there.Could also be the rubber headplug leak ,in the top of the cavity next to the exhaust header. It could be the two head bolts dead center front and back that go from the head down to the cylinder, they have been known to weep ,that can usually be cured with a bit of RTV and a retorque. Just keep an eye on your oil level ,and enjoy the ride!
