Title: Shifting into 5th
Post by Crockett on 06/26/17 at 21:03:12

Hey folks I have a question here on shifting into 5th gear. Seems when I do it I sometimes have to double shift with my foot to make sure it made the jump into 5th.

Maybe I'm not upshifting hard enough?, I dunno. Could it be that the upshift to 5th is shorter than the other gears? I make the shift at about 80 kilometers an hour and when downshifting I count the gears and I make 4 down shifts to get back to 1st.

Thoughts anyone?

best shift technique for me is a little up pressure before squeezing the lever.
a little squeeze and drop the throttle, the lever will jump into the next gear w/out fighting it.

Crockett, you might want to grease the ball and socket joints in the shift levers arms under the foot pegs.  See if that helps a little.

Mine has a bit of a double-position for 5th.  Most of the time there is a second click but either click engages 5th.  Hopefully, when it only hits the first click it's engaged enough that no edges are getting worn.  It's never slipped out of 5th so I'm not sure why it has the double click.  Anyone else have this?

+1.  I have the same issue that it seems I don't always catch 5th unless I am holding my mouth right. My joints are all greased, etc. It is just one of the nuances of this bike. I have never (knock on wood) had an issue with slippage in any gear.

I have just learned to manage it and get the clutch and throttle position in the right combination before I shift and 90% of the time it work fine.

Someone with a goot 'technical' explanation will come along.

Stew, I was having a hard time shifting up and an easy time shifting down until I moved the shifter arm 1 spline down (or up, don't remember).
Could be something similar?

I believe we all find fifth gear a little wonkie when shifting up ,I believe its because the difference in rpm is only about 250 higher than fourth, making the range that it will engage a smoothly a lot smaller than between any of the lower gears. I find the earlier you shift to 5th 45-50 the easier it goes in as compared to 55-65 .Closing the throttle a bit more than you think you need to, may make it easier.

I always keep a little lift pressure on the shifter as I release the clutch .... in each gear.

Technique is something we all use to some extent or another. What I do is keep 'light' pressure on the lever until I feel the gear engage fully. seems to work for me.

Light pressure, off the gas, and click, on the gas.

Only shifting issue I have had (other than normal bike characteristics that all bikes have) is when shifting down - as when coming to a stop.  It feels like it has gone all the way down to first, but when I start out, I find that I am still in 2nd.

Going into second "feels" like downshifting into first for some reason.  So, to compensate, I mentally count down each shift or I look for the green neutral light.

It also may help to be sure and wear solid shoes.  I found that when I ride with softer (heavy running shoes, for example) I often have a harder time getting into next gear, especially upshifting.

Running shoes really? you should be wearing boots ,They make replacement knees and hips ,not ankles and feet.  Protect your feet and ankles there are way to many small bones down there!Steel plates and screws suck !

I wear steel toed Red Wings. If I'm gonna want something else to wear when I get where I'm going, I carry it.

"Ditto" on comments by Batman, JoG, & Tocsick....

"ATGATT"...All the Gear, All the Time...helmet, eye protection, sturdy jacket, full- finger gloves, long pants, & over-ankle boots.

Just an FYI - I never wear running shoes now.  That was years ago!  I, too, wear heavy boots, helmet and armored jacket - ALL the time!

I've got to ask, when an original poster asks a serious question, why do many of these threads turn into non-sensical, unproductive comments?

Did the question get answered first?

Because if no one replies, then the OP feels unloved.
So if we reply with BS, we don't know.
But if we pop this sucker back to the top, maybe someone will.
Yeah... catch 22... even that had it's moment, a real life mass B-25 takeoff.

Piedmontbuckeye ,I guess I took it off topic but you were the one who said you were riding in jogging shoes and I was concerned with your well being .EXCUSE ME! ( but the question did get answered first, even by me)

I didn't mind your advice - actually I agree!  That's why I clarified about how I use boots now.

I was objecting to some of the snarly remarks that add nothing to the original question.

I even like some of the humor from time to time.

Point taken!  However, in this section, I really love the serious answers to the OP.  I often just read these posts and answers just to familiarize myself to serious answers to that, in the future, I have ideas on possible problems of my own that may crop up.

Even though I have disagreed with some, I still value the opinions and experiences of you folks!
