Title: Fires right up... idles just fine... And then...
Post by JennC on 06/25/17 at 13:36:18

Hey guys. One thing I learned fairly quickly is that I'm not really great at giving you all the information you need. I'm going to give you a brief rundown here and then post a video which will probably be able to tell you a lot more than I can.
So after joyously riding my Savage for a short time I managed to blow my motor up. I decided I would make my own gasket for the side cover. The rest is terribly embarrassing but I'm sure you can figure it out...top end doesn't do well without oil. Ok...did you get your laughs out.... How 'bout now? Moving on... So the other motor is on. Starts and idles fine. When I accelerate, it pops and makes hideous noise. Tore it down, checked the cam chain. All good. Timing marks as the should be. Blew in the carb... All clear. Checked the spark plug...
So.... Help me out and have a listen if you would. I'm at a loss here.

One thing I do want to add.... After the bike was tore down timing checked carb checked and I put it back together, it quit doing that. It sounded great. Then when I went back out this morning, it was doing all the popping again. I don't know that it would make any difference, but it was considerably cooler outside when I got put back together and was not having issues.

It might be an air leak in your intake path, I'd check the O-ring between the mounting boot and the head ,and the clamp that holds the carb on .you might try spraying some thing like wd-40 around that area to see if idle rpm changes as that would show a leak also. If your running a Raptor petcock you might want to check that the vacuum port is still properly sealed.

Just figured it out about 30 minutes ago. I had two motors. I switched out the fly wheel, and it's good to go. Runs better than ever.
But I do thank you so much. Everyone on here is always so helpful.

you mean you swapped the rotors... you didn't tell us you swapped a '96+ for a '80's motor.

It's not like she didn't warn us.

But I think she's taking "loose lips sink ships" a bit to far!

I swapped the fly wheel with a harmonic balancer tool. And I didn't know it was an 80's motor. But noticed the plate looked different and the number on the part was different. And my bad guys... I tell you what I know. I'm new at this, but I'm trying.

It's okay if you don't know what to tell us as long as you know how to fix it!
Good Going..
