Title: MM's Farm Trip
Post by Oldfeller on 06/15/17 at 07:22:48

THESE EVENTS ARE IN PLANNING AND DISCUSSION RIGHT UP TO THE GO DAY -- THE CONCRETE HAS NOT SET COMPLETELY YET UNTIL IT IS OVER.     I am still plugging in names as people show interest, this gives us a tool for seeing who is really going plus the folks who are going can start the refinement process on dates and activities.

So far we got the following items left in the rough order of doing them.   Adding something is easy, talk it up some, put a firm date to it and we will see if folks are interested by if they sign up for it.

Indian Paintbrush Campground in Ty Denver  Late July  NEED FIRM DATES   Verslagen,  old.indian, Thumperclone

MM's farm     Sept 8, 9 & 10    MM,  Dave,  Lancer,  StewMills, Verslagen1, Springman, Oldfeller

And here is a tool to use in locating some no cost camping when travelling to get to the rides:

I questioned the removal of my already approved days off -- my days were put in long in advance and were approved long in advance of the athletic events schedule.

My days were reinstated accordingly.

I think we need to plan some sort of rainy day "alternative events" that can take place in the stone house or underneath the covered carport or the aluminum back porch awning area.

Plan B kinds of things to do that would make the trip worth going to even if we lost a day due to rain .....

I think we have all been to MM's place and we know about the barn and the orchard and the cows and the stone house and the car port, awning, etc.

Hey there Oldfeller. I hope life is treating you well. I just wanted to say I cannot make any rides in July this year. I'm beginning to wonder if maybe I can make September work for me. We'll see.

Well I could use up half a day at the Jack Daniels tour.....and hanging out in downtown Lynchburg.

I plan to bring a gun or two and enough ammo for everyone to shoot some at MM's.    I will be hauling my Savage on the trailer behind my brown cube so hauling space is easy.

According to Springman's last post he moves over from Indian Paintbrush trip to MM's Farm trip.

As far as rain goes, MM has enough sheltered space, picnic table etc to support a 3 man shooting line.

YOU NEED TO BRING YOUR HEARING PROTECTION

MM, PM me your address please. I want to see how much time I would need to get there and back. Maybe there is some way I could manage to meet up with you guys in September. It sure would be nice if I could.

PM sent .    ;)

Hwy US-64 runs along the bottom of the state (East/West) and Lynchburg is about 15 miles North of US-64 in the middle of the state.   If ya stay on US-64 going East then it intersects with US-129 and runs up to the Dragon.  ;)
US-64 runs over to Lancers house too , in Oklahoma .  :)

MM's Culinary Challenge of the Trip

Question:   How many chicken wings does an 8 man group full of normal hungry guys snatch off the grill before the rest of the chicken gets done?

The quick answer is "all of them",   right ????   And the crowd of hungry guys always wishes there were more of them ......    after all the wings get done in less than half the time of a breast or a thigh and are simply the ultimate grill  "snatch food" extraordinary while doing any form of guy grilling event.

Everybody knows whatever you can snatch right off the grill always tastes better, right?   And wings still sizzlin' and dripping from the grill are the very best sort.

So, how many grilled wings could you personally snatch and munch up on before the leg quarters and breasts and thighs got done all the way?

Gimme a count of what you could snatch and munch, assuming MM wasn't whacking on your knuckles with the tongs for a doing it ......

(and you can also assume that we had found a mutant variety of chicken with more than 2 wings per bird)   ;)

;D

Next Trick Question:

What goes better with Grilled Chicken ..... baked beans or potato salad?

;)

Final Trick Question:   What sort of sauce do you personally put on grilled chicken?

Title: Re: MM's Farm Trip
Post by stewmills on 06/20/17 at 11:34:27

Maybe 8.  I'm not a big eater (little guy...little tummy).

Potato salad is good UNLESS it has eggs in it. I no likey eggs.

Sauce? BBQ Sauce of course!

Title: Re: MM's Farm Trip
Post by springman on 06/20/17 at 13:38:31

Ditto what Stew said. Other than the little tummy thing. ;D

Title: Re: MM's Farm Trip
Post by LANCER on 06/20/17 at 13:51:22

Any REALLY good potatoe salad ALWAYS has lists of eggs & chopped dill pickles with juice in it !
Good sweet red BBQ sauce.  [ch128526] [ch127949] [ch128641]

You're a hard man.
A fair man, but a hard man.

Title: Re: MM's Farm Trip
Post by Oldfeller on 06/20/17 at 19:23:19

So, consensus says ..... at least 8 wings per man, a small bowl of relatively egg-less potato salad, remainder made up normal, a small bowl of diced celery, a shaker of celery seed on the table.    What kind of pickles in the potato salad?   I can go either way, but some have a preference.  Sweet pickles is a good default, I guess --- but read on (we can customize).

I have a confession to make, at our family outings we buy large tubs of potato salad from the store and dolly it up some with extra mayo and pickle relish.   This trick would let us customize the potato salad some as needed.

Bring your own small squeeze container of the appropriate mustard if you use it (some folks do put that in potato salad, although I have never figured out why).

Bring a bottle of your very own favorite brand of BBQ sauce, as that varies by area quite a bit (and we all have the one we like already programmed into our taste buds).

Now, since I am bringing the chicken in a cooler, packed up in two gallon zip lock bags soaking and plumping up in grill marinade, the question becomes what soak marinade do you use ???

I generally plump up my grilling chicken in Italian Salad Dressing, as it gets into the meat good overnight, swells it up good (tenderizes it) and I haven't found anybody not liking the relatively mild flavor it imparts.   Plus it smells jest heavenly as it sizzles on the grill ......

(That's the trick boys, gets to you by your smellum from 20 yards away)

:D

I was picturing :  ::)
Bone-less Skin-less Chicken Brest , with Hassle back baked potatoes on the side ... and maybe some slaw and baked beans .  :)
But , we could take them really big tweezers and Duck some wings into a BBQ bath and land them on the grill beside the breast .   8-)
The grill is only four burners wide ... but it is tided to a 500 gal tank.  ;D

Hay , we can load the grill every day if ya'll want too.   I normally have evening meal about dark-thirty and don't pay much attention to what the clock says ... every day is Saturday too.  :)

I think I'm going to like ya'll coming by for a visit !  :P

Having seen MM cook, he does a good job ....  generally doesn't plan for all the finger snatching off the grill though (the fun part).

MM likes his white meat and he wasn't kidding about the BBQ sauce bath (BBQ sauce is one of his major food groups, it is) so to get some wings and drums into the mix ya gotta plan on bringing some with ya.

Plus, dark meat that is marinating in the 2 gallon zip locks can wait a day and just get better for the delay .....

Now OldFeller , you should know --- If I wacked your fingers , I'd use the dull side of the spatula  ;D ,  ;D ;D ;D ;D

besides , how ya to know when things are done ?   ;)

We might have to get back from ridding an hour before sundown just to make sure we get dinner done by dark.    I've been wanting some BBQ chicken like that feller in west Tn. made for us a few years ago... WD's buddy with the Drifter Motorcycle.   That must have been the best Chicken ever.    :P

Now that's my kinda egg should I ever have to eat them. I can eat scrambled eggs, but cooked WELL and with some S&P and CHEESE!

It's a consistency thing...I like burgers pretty well done, fish cooked until it is rather dry and crispy, no sushi or calamari, no 'skrimps' no oysters, no clams, etc. that are spongy and squishy in your mouth.

Yep, we need to get Mike to extend the invite time if the span of days isn't big enough to fit in all the fun you wanna do.

Me, I am planning on bringing a reloader and stuff to make up some ammo after I discover which way I can best trick some super slow 50 cal powder into working best with some really heavy 7mm bullets.

Might have enough time make up some Swiss 7.5x55 for a K-31 if somebody can get the brass cleaned up and resized ahead of time and actually find the white .308 jacketed slugs I gave MM a while back.   If not I am bringing two bags of lubed lead sized as per specified "Like Mike likes" dimensions.

Guys , how about we call the weekend the 8th - 12th .   :-?

On Saturday there is the Bike Rally , including poker run , mid day entertainment , music in the evening .

There are a lot of good rides in the area , its just "how far/long is/are folks good for ?"

Leaving time for Wings on the grill might be the hard part !   ::)

we don't want to leave OldFeller alone with wings cooking  ;D

Title: Re: MM's Farm Trip
Post by Oldfeller on 08/07/17 at 22:26:48

Marinated wings will also roast in a 350o oven in about a half an hour.   Big aluminum pan that I can bring does them all at once, then they can become "any time you want a snack out of the fridge" type food.   Given 5 days and 8 guys, I think they will all get eaten.

(probably gone by day #2 actually)

Ya got 2 spare bikes, so I will ride some and shoot some and snack some -- easy do vacation style.

Now, for the rest of you guys ...... Do you have some expended brass, new bullets and a set of reloading dies?   If so, I am pretty sure we can fix you up with some reloaded ammo if you are willing to exercise the lever.

Tell me the caliber we are talking about so I can check my stuff for dies and components.

This is me practicing my oven cooking tricks in the big aluminum pan (so big it barely fits into the oven).

This is a half a bag of chicken leg quarters and drums -- I got two full bags of chicken wings to marinate for us.    Might make up a couple of tray fulls and a couple of meals (and some snacks for left overs).

I found out ... I can't be loaning my bike out ...  :-[   All it would take would be some jerk pull out in front of ya and I'd be stuck with the bill for a car , your hospital bill , the jerks hospital bill , and be left with a tore-up bike and no insurance to cover any of it.     Don't sound very good to me.  Sorry , but that's how the deck is stacked.   :P

Yep, 300 degrees would do it, or 250 degrees, it would just take longer.

100 degrees will do it.
Just takes a long time
And you need to be hungry for

In my estimation, grilled chicken (or baked chicken) requires a sealing sear on both sides and then a dwell time until approximately 1/5 of the water and chicken drippings have exited the grilled meat -- a slight shrinkage and an increase in meat density that goes along with getting tender and "done".

Then tear A BIG PIECE apart at the joint to see if the joint section is cooked all the way to the bone  ---  the joint should give fairly easily with no trace of pink  ---  this final test separates done bird from "still cooking" bird.

A little overcooked is much preferred to a little undercooked when talking poultry.   And the meat should be served hot off the grill .....

And this too is why the wings get done and get eaten long before the main pieces are completely cooked.

It is also why breast meat gets overcooked and gets dry so frequently -- it does not give a lot of visible signs that it is overcooking like dark meat pieces do.

So I've got a cookie sheer that barely fits in a standard oven , it also barely fits in the smoker.  The smoke4 has 5 shelves . so if  a cook was to but wings on the top rack , Brest strips on the next shelf , leg quarters on the next shelf , and hassle-back potatoes on the bottom two shelves ...then that should feed 10 people for two days ! I will bring a couple of the deep aluminum pans like this one (new) so we can ease the clean up chores by tossing them when we are done.    Or if you like them, wash them and use them again.

Hey, once used a few times they make a great drain pan to change the oil in your bike.

The nice thing about sand in your food is ya don't hafta chew as long. It's like having a buncha tiny little teeth in there helping.
Downside is

We are 3 weeks and a bit out from the trip.

THOSE GUYS THAT ARE TRUCKING IT IN --- DO YOU HAVE A LARGE ICE CHEST YOU CAN BRING WITH YOU?   Not only do we have to store some meat on ice but we also need to have a way to ice down your favorite beverages.

JOG has said he can't drive or ride due to illness, so I guess that means he isn't coming.

How about the rest of the invited folks?   Have you contacted Hammer and the rest to remind them about the trip?    Did you remind them to bring a folding chair and THEIR HEARING PROTECTION?

Anyway, I actually spoke with Hammer just yesterday and he is definitely still in. I do not believe I will try to haul a folding chair 800 miles. If needed I am sure I can buy one at a Walmart near MM's. I will bring my plinker and ammo just like I did at Lancer's. I imagine Steve will bring his cannons also. See ya later, alligator!

So, if we want AC, we can eat in AC comfort while using knife and fork?    Do we have to stick our little pinkies out like the Brits do while sipping on our beverage?

Me, I predict a crew of Bohemians standing out beside the grill, rudely tossing wing bones into an open trash can and licking on their fingers while they wait for the main meal to finish cooking.

Then they all become Ms. Manners once it is time to wash their paws and sit down inside and say grace.

That MYTH about chicken bones and dogs ain't true , its RAW bones you don't give dogs (they splinter).
The cooked bones you start dog fights with !  ;)  or get bitten by the dogs if you trash their goodies !  ;D

That reminds me ... "I'm not responsible for anyone's else behavior or anybody's injury's while ya'll are here"  in other words "Don't expect me or my insurance to be liable for anything"   .    "Enter  your own risk"   The dog only bites because he is farsighted and can't tell your finger from the snack your giving him , but he catches fairly well if ya toss something .  He eats anything so keep up with your gloves and such !  ::)

And NO tossing each other at the dog !  ;D

Well, heard several of my co-workers discussing their cancelled vacation days, so I went to Paycom and checked on my already pre-approved vacation and found half of it had disappeared.

I have asked the WTF question, saying I had money invested in hotel reservations and need to know what is going on.   Getting the big silence, so that means the vacation was cut by Admin and my immediate supervisors can't say what or why 'cause they simply don't know.

It all revolves around low enrollment and cut back hours and Admin not approving the hiring on the 3 people we are missing at the moment.

Hard Reality is that everyone we have is working 50-60 hour weeks to cover the basic services we MUST PROVIDE.

Will repost as more becomes known.    Smells like we are in Limbo, not allowed to hire when it was needed to be done and now we are stuck behind the 8 ball for not having the people to do what the University needs in any sort of timely fashion.

=======================================

Got a terse reply from 3 levels up  ......  All vacation has been cancelled for Security until we get back up to manning.

As of right now I am out, sorry.

Title: Re: MM's Farm Trip
Post by springman on 08/17/17 at 11:48:04

Sorry to hear that Oldfeller. I am just curious, they are paying you overtime for the hours in excess of 40 in on week, right? If so, those numskulls need to understand it is actually cheaper to just hire additional bodies. Good luck to you, amigo!

Title: Re: MM's Farm Trip
Post by Oldfeller on 08/17/17 at 12:20:27

Yep, we ARE getting paid for the overtime.   What is wearing is that it is a direct result of a policy that was supposed to save the University money, but is going to bust folks butts and in the end is going to wind up costing more money in overtime and in paid vacation hours (which are darn well coming by golly).

And yes, we know that, but the liberal minded wizards running the show don't understand that at all.   It is a knee jerk sort of thing, which is all we get, a long series of knee jerks.

The top floor of a 3 story dorm is empty at this time -- enrollment is down that much.    By the time it all settles out, overall manning needs to decrease by about that same amount.

Title: Re: MM's Farm Trip
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 08/17/17 at 12:59:38

Businesses always land on the backs of their employees.
That they are creating overtime is hard to swallow.
I'm wondering all kinds of things.

Title: Re: MM's Farm Trip
Post by Oldfeller on 08/17/17 at 19:28:12

The overtime is a short term function of not allowing any hiring over the summer and then being critically short on people in the fall.

The knee jerk reaction to not having enough people to cover the shifts always results in overtime -- which is then cost reduced by collapsing the job functions as much as possible and by then hiring just enough people to get rid of the overtime.

Overstressing the people results in folks quitting, which exacerbates the situation more.

How many visitors to expect and where to put everybody  ?

Ya'll pack like your going to a CAMP-GROUND

I've got :
One guest room w/bed
One Rock House w/couch+chair , two cots , 42"TV w/25-30 channels
One 8'x10'x72" tent
One 8'x10'x52" tent
One living room w/5 recliners -- not enough room for a lot of gear
One fire pit/sitting wall area
One patio w/grill and smoker and 2-tables w/chairs-benches for 30 folks
One carport-3 car size ,  I can clear off for parking
Limited Wi-Fi , we watch Netflix but it take All the band width we can get.

The weather looks good - Tuesday appears to be "iffy" for both Tennessee and Kentucky at this point, and I may be leaving Monday night if Tuesday ends up being wet for my ride home.

I am likely to sneak off and go riding during some of the shooting events, as I have had very little time to go riding this summer.

Hey gang. Sorry I haven't followed up on my status. My schedule lately has been hit or miss and have had some other time away dipping into my available "play days."

I was out some the previous two weeks and have another out of office appointment this week, so I am trying to not take additional time off from work this week.  We also have a family event that arose for this Sunday.

What I am working on right now is getting the wifey to let me come for an all days Saturday blowout. Meaning I will either come late Friday after work (about a 3.5 - 4 hour drive) or super early Saturday morning, hope to make the drive worth it by riding until my butt is raw and the sun goes down, and come home late Saturday evening.

I have some 'negotiating' to do so I'll keep you posted.

The wifey seems to not want me to drive up, ride, and drive home in one day (I've done much longer day trips!). I may drive up Friday after work for the sleepover and Saturday riding. I'll keep you posted...

How about the drive up Friday, ride Saturday, and drive home early Sunday schedule? ;)

Got a terse reply from 3 levels up  ......  All vacation has been cancelled for Security until we get back up to manning.

As of right now I am out, sorry.

Nothing has changed except a football game was declared for this upcoming weekend.  I am still working extra day (s) each week with no one allowed to take any vacation at all.    If you had scheduled vacation that was approved (me for one) then they issued pay instead of vacation.   Another member of security quit because they found a better job so this isn't going to be getting any better real quick.

Michael and I are taking off this morning.  Well, I am up but Michael has not stirred yet.  I am wanting to leave by 7am at the latest.
It is a beautiful day for a drive.

I think it is going to be a nice day for a ride as well - but the current 49 degrees has me a bit intimidated.  Those low temperatures make me shake more than the engine does!  I guess I have to dress warm, and put my rain gear on to keep the breeze out of my clothing until the sun warms things up a bit.

It is 6:15 here in KY and I am ready to get dressed and start packing up the bike - I don't want to leave until daylight arrives.

Oldfeller - Sorry your employer is so brutal in their treatment of their employees.  I can't imagine a modern day employer can get by with that kind of abuse.

You guys travel safe!

It is looking like I will likely be heading up after work tomorrow to arrive around 10pm Central.  I'll get things confirmed tonight and offer a final status and ETA tomorrow.

Irma

Rains bands start in SC/Georgia Sunday, the heavy rain stuff reaches MM's Monday afternoon/evening with normal rain bands arriving somewhat earlier.

Expect some lighter attendance at the motorcycle rally accordingly.   Folks will not have the weekend free to travel back south at all.

Sometimes hurricanes veer off when they hit land, hope this happens this time.

Rain gear, boys, rain gear.

Someone PM me with MMs address so I know where I'm heading. Otherwise I'll come to Lynchburg and just go hand out at the Jack Daniels distillery all day and sample their product.

Ok gang...I'll be heading out for MM's Ranch here shortly. I'm avoiding Birmingham traffic and taking a more scenic route up 431 through Gadsden, etc.  Shorter distance but more small towns. Still hoping to get there around 10pm or shortly thereafter.  I have Dave's number if I run into any snags and need to connect with anyone directly.

Well, I had intended to put up some photos of the TN trip but I don't know how to copy the photo addresses form my phone or iPad and put them here.  I will have to wait until I get home and do it from the desk top.
So, even though I cannot post photos ...aren't we having SOME FUN HERE !?
YEP !
With good food, wonderful hosts, and motorcycles, what could be better ?

Home! 4 hour trip turned into 5. Had to stop at HomeDepot and get a few severe weather supplies. We're sorta in the path for potential bad weather late monday/tues. It is already gusting here maybe 10-15mp in East Central AL.

Great day of riding yesterday! Thanks to MM and family for hosting us, and the great eatins' and nice bunk house. Great to finally meet Lancer and Versy as well. Just all around great folks here!

Now on to check the generators and chainsaws and tuck away anything that strong winds might take away.

I left early this morning, and I am in Cookeville, KY right now and stopped for a bathroom break and to put on another layer. With no sun it is chilly riding.

Time to get moving again!

Dave , I was watching the radar after you left and the rain was coming in from the East as well as the South .   I was hopping you'd get through the gap before the rain cut it off.   The rain advance was moving West at about 30 mph. and where Tn. 111 and US 127 meet is the northern part of the gap ... for the moment.
Glad you didn't dilly-doddle any about getting North a little !  ;)

Lancer and Versey got clear and will probably never see any of the rain or wind , they got on I-40 put the pedal to the metal and went West !  ;D

I stayed dry the entire trip....I just got home a few minutes ago....about 9:30 PM.  When I got to Danville, KY I looked at my emails.  I saw the attorney for one of the cities I worked for wanted me to inform council about the cost of upcoming projects.  He evidently had not received the word that I was out of town (I told the City Clerk before I left)......so I rerouted to the 7:30 City Council Meeting rather that going home.  It was good that I went - but it certainly wasn't how I expected to end the day....or the trip.

I had a great time, I rode 1,190 miles on the trip - 395 miles today.  The only bad part about the trip home was I hit Lexington, KY at the 4 PM rush hour, and traffic was heavy and slow.

This was my first Road Trip on the Honda NT700, and it proved to be a great Sport Touring bike for me.  It is smooth, has plenty of power, and it is very comfortable for my 5'-8" frame, and my backside never got tired on the trip home yesterday.  I got somewhere around 58 mpg on the trip.

The bike and I leaving Lynchburg yesterday morning.

Glad everyone (Versy?) made it home safe and avoided the weather.

Here's a somewhat ironic picture. I just happened to wear my Dukes of Hazzard tshirt Saturday and had no knowledge of where we were riding or that this would occur. Later in the day we ended up deciding to go to Leiper's Fork where they have some old movie themed cars, and wouldn't you know it, they had The General.

Corny, but I couldn't resist a picture with the car and my matching tshirt.

Versey , sorry you had to go home ... but glad you had a safe trip  !   :)

I did a 100 mile ride today up toward Nashville and back on the Guzzi , its more powerful but not as comfortable  as the Savage .   So , if we're going  Wild-Hog style next summer then I'm ridding the Savage .

So , Dave - how many miles a day is the Honda good for ?
Dave , I realize its ... way ... way early -- but you thinking of ridding or trailering .
