Title: Exhaust pipe to head flange
Post by piedmontbuckeye on 05/26/17 at 16:45:56

Has anyone had any experience with the flange ring on the head-to-pipe?  I took mine off, and am contemplating making my own out of aluminum with fairly large fins for better cooling.  Mine is a 2011 with about 7,000 miles and it runs great!

However, when I took mine off to measure it up, I noticed two interesting things:  1) the flange had been "bowed" from the tightening of the two bolts - not too far as it then runs into the head restricting any further bending - BUT . . . when it does get bent, it doesn't hold the pipe in the head as tightly as I think it was supposed to!  Anyone had any issues with this or thoughts about it?  and:
2) What do you think the original flange is made of?  Just looking at it when it was assembled, it appeared to be chrome-plated steel.  But after taking it off, it was way too light for steel.  Could it be aluminum?  Some I had take a look at it suggested Titanium.  It is definitely NOT magnetic.

Anyone know for sure?

dunno what it's made from but mine's bent too. doesn't seem to matter.

The clamp is chrome plated pot metal.....or at most a cheap grade of aluminum.

Smokin_blue made his own out of aluminum using a hand operated mill.

If over tightened ,or over time we all have some of this, but it likely doesn't matter. when you tighten the ring the pressure is spread around the entire ring on the pipe,if it wasn't we would be looking at four or six bolts. I'd just buy a new gasket that hasn't been compressed ,this should space the clamp out from the block if you tighten the mounting bolts to the torque called for,(low) as the gasket needs only to withstand exhaust pressure of about 100 psig.
