Title: Traded my s40 in
Post by Jarhead-CO on 05/18/17 at 18:23:40

So I traded my s40 in today, I bought it to commute 100 miles a day and after adding up everything I needed to do to get it where I wanted I would have been spending over $1k. So I bought a leftover 2014 Honda CTX700 for $3999 and got $2k for my s40. It's got a Tach and Speedo up front not on the tank plus a fuel gauge and 3.27 gallon tank with 64mpg here she is.

100 miles a day, you did good.
Don't run off just because you don't have a Savage.

I'll step in time to time to stir the pot in the political section.

You will be cruising, when the S40's working.

Give us a review after you've got some miles on it.

I know a couple guys who are very happy with that bike.  Super comfortable.  Enjoy  and check in with us every once in a while. Who knows, maybe you'll pick up a Savage for fun in the future for that old skool shifting experience!

They've still got one left  ;D but yeah it is way better on the highway and so SMOOTH plus I got the 1 year factory warranty on it as well. It's also got a 6th gear lol.

Mine is still a manual I didn't get the automatic. It is way more comfortable and the 100 miles I put on it today were easy going.

Sure thing. I put 100 miles on it today and my initial impression is I love it. It's 100 pounds heavier but how the motor is placed in it it feels lighter than the s40. Acceleration isn't sport bike level but Much faster and smoother the shifting is crisp and not clunky at all. The throttle response is much better (I stalled it the first time I got on it not trying to over rev it) but the grips are smaller and I may want to get bigger ones. It is much more sporty in the twisters with good lean. The wind buffeting is 100% better I may get the one taller screen but I'm not sure it seems good for now. Now the important point for me is leg placement and seat comfort both are leaps and bounds better plus the suspension soaks up the bumps beautifully no more jarred spine (comparing it on the same roads I drive daily)

First of all, congratulations !

My only suggestions:

1. If you want a taller screen, get one that'll reach up to chin level and no higher; you want to see over the windshield, not through it; remember, you have no wipers...

2. It may be a good idea to fit extra stop lights in the rear (as I did) à la red indicators, so that when you brake you have THREE little red lights, not just the one.

8-)

Enough said.  Moderators, revoke his account!   >:(

In all seriousness, enjoy your new ride.  If I had to commute daily for 100 miles I would probably consider something like the CTX that is more of a highway bike...but I have already completed all of the mods that increase the "gearing" and my wife says I have to stay off the super-slab so I guess I won't be getting to go shopping anytime soon.

Not the coolest bike in the world, but perfect for your needs. So much more practical for your commuting at a very reasonable cost.   Smart move.

I commute 55 miles round trip. My 70s UJM style LS650 build suites me pretty well.  It fits me a little better than the stock Savage. (I'm 6'3" and my legs were a little uncomfortable by time I got home last year.)  If I was riding any further on a daily basis, I'd probably do something like you did.

Yep...me too!  For comfy riding and the ability to haul stuff and also take my wife along - I bought a used NT700....which in some ways is the predecessor of the CTX700.

It doesn't have a big "cool" factor - hopefully just 100,000 miles of trouble free riding.

Congratulations on the new ride and you should stay with this forum because most of us are interested in all makes of motorcycles.  Your comments about the weight and feel of your new bike are interesting.  The extra 100 pounds has discouraged me from even looking at one at my local Honda dealer.  It's hard to imagine that it would feel lighter than the Savage.  I would have thought that the fairing, being up high, would have offset the gains made by the low mounted engine.  It looks good and I like the color, you made a great deal.

Yeah the looks were kinda weird at first but after riding it and seeing how it's all set up it is growing on me quickly. If you are in the market for a bike like this I would highly recommend scheduling a test drive. When I want a "cool" bike I'm not sure what I'd go for but this thing is a lot of fun. I'll probably run this bike till it quits but since I ride at night every day I am going to add auxiliary lighting. I'll add a review after 1000 miles.

Congratulations on your new Honda. I really liked the automatic DCT on my CTX and thought it was much happier than my S40 at higher speeds, but in no way did it feel lighter or more maneuverable than my S40. At least that's my experience from owning both. Maybe the DCT made the difference. CTX was much better at overall handling than my C50 or Shadow 750, but I was really surprised when I was able to turn around neighborhood corners tighter, faster and without scraping foot pegs on S40 compared to the CTX. I really liked the sport/touring/cruiser versatility, superior braking and long commute comfort of the CTX, but still very happy with the S40.

Congrats on the new ride!

I know we will all be waiting to hear a 1,000 mile review and maybe a 10,000 mile review.

It looks like a nice bike. I really like the idea of a flat seat. It doesn't appear in the picture to slope forward like almost all of them do these days.  I hate fighting to stay on the seat instead of being wedged up against the tank.

Enjoy it and put LOTS of mile on it.

I'm pretty sure the DCT adds like 40 or 50 lbs so that could be. It doesn't feel lighter while standing still and moving the bike side to side but steering response and maneuverability seem more planted and precise maybe giving the illusion of being lighter, also I weigh 250lbs so I have enough weight to man handle the bike. I can do a feet up u turn on a standard road no problem. I'm almost positive the ctx has more lean before you start scraping pegs. Cornering speed for me is kinda the same since I drive back country roads most of the time the corners are always covered in dirt and gravel so I corner cautiously. Braking is much better on the CTX I agree and I am very much enjoying my daily commute. I took it today even though I know I'm probably going to get rained on for my ride home.
