Title: Lower belt guard?
Post by norm92de on 05/10/17 at 14:25:36

Anybody removed the lower belt guard?

It looks nice but doesn't seem to do much. Saving weight ;D

There isn't much weight to be saved by removing the guard, the fastest and cheapest way to lose weight on a stock bike is to can the stock muffler and get a Dyna .I've believe the savings is about 10 pounds. The other way is when the owner of the China Buffet comes up to you and says "You to fat! You need to eat more vegabuls!" :( :( :(

If you only ride paved roads.....the lower belt guard most likely isn't giving you a lot of protection.

If you ride dirt or gravel roads....it will help to keep stones and other debris out of the belt.

Ohio good tip! so between the new battery and the Dyna you could shed 20+/- pounds off the bike, For every 13/14 pounds loss ,it's like gaining 1 hp,so with these mods you've gained the equivalent of 1 1/2 hp,That doesn't sound like much until you think of it as a 5% increase ,and that's not counting the increase in real hp gained by the use of the Dyna and a retune of the carb.

I know, but in my case it would be cheaper to lose 50lbs.  Those little batteries aren't cheap! LOL

Not enough room for clothes hangers to be really useful.

I guess tongue in cheek was not too evident. :'(

You know we're gonna make it all wrong somehow... no matter Where you put your tongue.

You could use Ex-lax but you might be on the seat a while (not the bike seat). ;D

I took off the upper belt guard,... but kept the lower in place...
The lower side of the belt is a conveyor to the rear pulley...
...gravity protects the upper...

I can see that being OK with your solo seat ,but I'm riding two most of the time, and my passenger needs her leg protected. I've always kept both ,but cut off the upper just two inches past the shock thinking the hooked part might gather more road dust or stones than it would shed. My belt is still looking good after 22years and nearly 30,000 miles.
