Title: crankcase oil sightglass.... can't see thru!!!
Post by madmikesmech on 05/06/17 at 06:09:33

Hello all, I'm Mike, I am a newbie here on this forum. I just picked up a '99 Savage
, good running order, 25,000 on the clock, so before I start putting my own miles on I feel the need to go thru it a little bit.
Anyhow, I cannot see the oil level through the sightglass. Has anyone else had this problem?

Is the sightglass window dirty?  If so....the previous owner must not have done regular oil changes and the oil got very dirty.

You are probably due to remove the right side engine cover and check your cam chain tensioner......that would provide you access to the sight glass to clean it.

It's Time to look at the cam chain.
Definitely.
If it's overfilled with dirty oil the window will be black.
If it's still got the factory petcock the o i l may be loaded with gasoline.

You need to get to know that bike before you start putting miles on it.

Thanks for the tips! I have already been in communication with Verslavy about a replacement cam chain adjuster. What is the issue with the stock fuel petcock? Are there good replacements available?

Genuine Yamaha Raptor petcock.
No cheap knockoff.

Thanks Verslagen1, gonna check it out!
What is the issue and are they all faulty?

The diaphragm in the stock vacuum petcock is known to be unreliable. Even on many new models. It can leak or restrict fuel flow. The symptoms often present like unpredictable and weird carb issues - intermittent starvation, poor vacuum, and/or flooding.

I was chasing 'carb issues' for some time until I discovered the stock petcock was leaking into the vac line.

The manual petcock off the Yamaha Raptor 660 is a bolt-on swap. You just need to plug the vac inlet on the carb which connects to the stock petcock when you do the swap. The swap also makes it easier to remove the tank as the Raptor clears the frame more easily.

The stock petcock is doomed to fail,It's just a matter of time, the diaphragm ,either gets old ,and closes at speed ,or gets holes and runs gas into the vacuum line which goes into your air filter or through the cylinder into your oil.

Well I did an oil and filter change Sunday. (Rottella T4 15w40) and now the sight glass is crystal clear!! The old oil had only 200 miles since it's last filter change, BUT  2011 was the date. The P.O. wrote the date snd mileage on the filter with a sharpie permanent marker.
