Title: Hand Removable Seat Bolts
Post by stewmills on 05/03/17 at 19:58:55

So, several of us wanted seat pins for a quick release but didn't want to permanently drill through the seat flange nuts and eliminate the threads.

Well, after giving it some thought and wanting a "fairly quick" release that would primarily let me remove the seat by hand in a pinch with no tools or a roadside breakdown, we have this new invention.  It uses a wing nut for hand use as well as an allen head for when you have tools available. There is some trimming of the allen head required so it sits flush down into the wing nut (don't trim the wing nut because you will create a stress point and one day it'll break on you), and I as well cleaned the threads of both very well and permanently fused them together with JB Weld and tightened the bolt down very snug into the wing nut so they will permanently act as one in both directions.  I will eventually paint it all black, primarily to seal the surface that I had to grind down.

It's a pretty simple job...just an M6x1 allen head bolt and wing nut and a washer and you're in business. Make your own for $1.50 or let me make them for you for $19.95 plus shipping and handling. Act NOW and get two for the price of one, just pay extra processing  ;D ;D ;D ;D

Enjoy. Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing, Stew.  How/where did you trim the Allen head?

It appears that he turned down the outside diameter of the Allen head so it rested into the wingnut.
Don't trim away the "ears" of the wing-nut or you will weaken it.
You want the Allen head to tighten against the top of the wing-nut - to make it almost like a 1 piece assembly

Wing Bolts are available at bolt & nut wholesalers.

+1
This is a good idea. I think I'll make a couple of these for my fuel tank.

Yep, just took off a tiny bit of the outside of the allen head with a dremel.

I forgot that they made wing bolts!!! I had fun reinventing them anyhow  ;)

Stew,

I have been reinventing gadgets all of my life just to find out that I could buy the gadget easier than I can make it.

It might take a bit of looking around to find Metric Wing Bolts.

www.mcmaster.com has M6 wing bolts.  Don't know what minimum buy and shipping would add up to though.

Cool.  Yep, I see them now.  16mm length for less than $3 each, not sure what shipping or minimum quantity is though.  Maybe one of our suppliers (Versy?) should stock up on a few to go with his other seat pins?

The only benefit to the "ALLENWING" is that you double down and have the wing AND allen head for easier take-off with an allen socket. I have to admit it is a tight space up in there and I have little hands (JUST hands...JUST little hands :-?) and I prefer to use the tool as it is easier and faster, but having the wingnut there for an emergency was my main goal and it definitely works.

I'll have to look into it... we can call it a stewbolt.   8-)
