Title: Valve clearance adjustment - New Rocker arms
Post by Mekh on 04/21/17 at 03:16:48

Hi,

Having installed new rocker arms and using the adjustment screws that came with them, does it seem plausible that I would need to adjust valve clearances after only about 100km?

My thinking so far is that because the screws are new, there are no deformation hardening of the surface hitting the valve stems, which could result in the clearance becoming larger rather fast.

Anyone have any experience with new rocker arms/screws regarding this?

You have a new cam, new rockers, and new adjustment screws.  The clearance you set will change faster than it will at any other time in it's life....but having to make an adjustment in 100km (62 miles) is likely a bit soon.

Still.....if you think they need checking/adjustment - no harm in doing it.

I don't think it's needed yet, but only that I can already hear it ticking.

Just wanted to get some feedback on it (reassurance hopefully :))

On that note... HOW do I go about adjusting the intake valves without taking the engine out of the frame?

I haven't tried adjusting them yet, but it looks pretty much impossible. Anyone have some photos/video of how they do it and what tools they use to do it with?

You have to remove the seat and fuel tank to get the intake valves adjusted.  It is a squeeze, and you will get better at it each time you do it.

I have feeler gauges I have bent into a "Z" shape that help a lot.

Thank you. It looks like we'll have rainy weather in the coming days, might spend some time doing it then.
I'm sure it will be a joyful experience.... or something...  :)

Take heart I the fact that you can hear them, your not going to hurt anything if the gap is growing ,it's when you can't hear them your in trouble .
