Title: Gears Won't Engage Motor Seems to Be Running Fine.
Post by HillSavage on 04/10/17 at 18:39:02

Was trying to ride my '97 Savage up a dirt drive way and all of a sudden I smelled the clutch burn and the motor would die.  Fired it up and tried to drive up hill two more times and then engine power wouldn't transfer to wheel and bike just sat idling.  Any thoughts?  Now when I push bike there is definitely a weird clunk to the point where I don't want to move.  sounds like binding on gear or metal then frees up for rest of rotation.  Thank you.

check for rocks in you drive belt, you might have to remove the pulley cover.

Thanks Verslagen, will be checking on bike in a few hours.  Ps, do you have any cam chain adjusters, finally got cash together.  Was going to order yesterday, however bike failed.

Didn't see any rocks in drive belt but after transferring bike between trucks and driveways I think it is rolling better.  Bike still fires right up but it is hard to shift through gears and the bike will not drive itself in any gear.  Pulled timing chain and clutch cover, smells burned, oil is dark and there is definitely wear on clutch.  Any ideas?

How much slack in your cable?
Can you flip the clutch lever around some?

Is that rod getting pushed in when you put the cover on?
Have you told us everything you've done?

Clutch lever can move about halfway through motion freely, is that what you mean?  Feels kinda loose.

Which rod?  Yea, I just bought bike a little bit ago, haven't had many dollars to tinker with.  Need to get verslagen cam chain adjuster, let me know if there is any other information you need.

You really need to read what is in the oil. The New and Improved crap will mess your clutch up.
How many miles since the oil change?

Redline full synthetic 10w-40 is what I utilized for the oil change, I am pretty positive, called the shop.

good stuff

IF YOU WANT A REAL "overkill" SUPER-OIL (way way beyond reasonable needs all by itself)
Redline 10W40 Motorcycle Oil  is $10-$14 a quart here (the price varies month on month from Amazon when bought by the case).

This  motorcycle oil whups everybody on ZDDP by like twice over, so don't be looking for a measly mere JASO rating on it.

Specs are here http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=109&pcid=21

Looks like your clutch is toast.

Where are you located?

Northern California, any suggestions on a clutch that I should go with?

You don't have much choice... OEM, Barret with OEM materials or Barret with Kevlar.

If you're thinking of any performance upgrades, then go with Kevlar.
and a SV650 clutch is the same as a LS650 with an extra disk.
