Does anyone know how far off the ryca speedometer is, if it is used with a stock rear rim and tire?

Ruttly ,Savageguy said stock so I'm thinking he has the 140/80/15,I'm running 140/90/15. On the face of the Ryca speedo is printed with 60 mph at 2240RPM ?(I think) but I'm not sure how this relates to the speed of the motor or the drive gears for the speedo cable.Are all speedo built to this standard?Is the stock one?

A tall 16" is pretty close to a low 18" , I was looking for total height from ground to top of tire. I have 18" but have tall tires , I think my speedo reads a bit slow.

Batman, the cable turns 2240 times when the speedo reads 60 mph. ;)

I have a RYCA speedo and never noticed that ! Maybe time for some new glasses ! 8-)

Last time I saw a pic of one it was in fine print across the bottom of the face,just couldn't remember the exact RPM. I believe the difference in diameter of your 18 " tire(because of the narrower rim) is only about 1 1/2' larger than the 15 ,which means you could be reading just slightly lower.

The easiest way to know for sure is to set up a GPS, which is easy to do. My stock speedometer on my stock bike is reading 5 mph over the real speed between 55 and 65 mph.

JLC, that error you have is normal,and one of the reasons that most go to the 140/90/15 tire rather than the stock 140/80/15,the other is a better selection in the taller size.the change will put your speedo close to right on the money.

In mechanical speedometers....there is always a lack of universal precision - and that applies to the stock speedometer and the RYCA as well.

As Batman stated, the general consensus is that the stock speedo reads a bit faster than they are going - while the 2002 bike I had was pretty accurate when checked with a GPS. The same will generally apply to the RYCA speedometer....however this thread still has not gotten any response from somebody that has installed a RYCA speedometer (or the eBay equivalent) and is running the stock rear tire.

I worked at a company that used the speedo from a ford pinto as a flow meter. And we had to re-calibrate them to do that.

We'd spin them up and check the speed, then hit'm with a demag to adjust the speed. My guess would be w/in 5% is lucky.

The speedo reading is just ballpark on our bikes due to the constant wear on our rear tires.If it started right on the money it wouldn't stay that way very long.
